Township Approves Water
Project
Tuesday, August 26, 2008 - IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP
--
The Ironwood Township Board meet in regular
session Monday afternoon and approved
resolutions to enter into a financing
contract with the Gogebic Range Water
Authority.
The township will become a participant in
the Gogebic Range Water Authority. The
financing will come about through a
combination of a grant (45%) and a loan
(55%). The improvement plan will cost around
5 million dollars.
According to Jean Verbos, administrator at
the water authority, the township has old
water mains that leak and replacement lines
are in order. Under the current plan
approximately six homes on Junet Road will
remain on the City lines for a temporary
period. Jean also mentioned that the City of
Ironwood was facing a consent decree from
the DEQ
If you recall in an earlier IronwoodInfo
report that there was a substantial water
leak on Lake Road at the Mobile Home Park.
Thousands of gallons of water were lost and
The City of Ironwood refused to give the
Township a credit for the costly leak!
What the Township did get was another
unconscionable rate
hike.
Nick Basso a township employee came before
the board asking for a pay increase. It
seems that Nick works with another employee
who receives significantly more pay per
hour. However, the other employee does have
work related licenses which account for
increases in his union scale. The board
stated that he must go through the union who
will bring the issue to the township. The
board understands the dilemma and said that
they would act on his situation after he
goes to the union.
In other business fireman Josh Ludtke, made
a presentation to the board regarding a new
pumper truck that he felt was needed. The
price of the used truck is approximately
$70,000 and the interest on a loan would be
4.5% The stated that this was not the proper
time for the proposal and it should be
brought to the board's attention during the
budget process.
The management of the Wildwood Apartments
requested that $2,000 placed in their
utility account be adjusted out and into
their tax account. The board approved the
measure.

Porcupine Mountain
Music Festival - 2008 |
 |
Silver City - August 23, 2008 |
The Porcupine Mountain Music Festival produced
another great musical event this past weekend. The
musical festival in only its forth season attracted more
than 1000 fans. This is an increase of more than
100 spectators from 2007. The success of the festival
has caused festival producers thinking in terms of
capping the size of future events. |

Celtic There aren't many groups in
North America who could lay claim to possibly 18
different genres of music, but Toronto's Enter The
Haggis is one of them. To engage this quintet is to
indulge rock, fusion, bluegrass, traditional Celtic
fare, agitpop, folk, even Latin flavors. Sounds awfully
confused, right? Wrong. ETH is one of those rare jewels
that actually pulls it all off as if to own everything. |

Rotary Generously Donates
$10,000 for Skateboard Park |
 |
Ironwood
August 11, 2008
Monday evening the city of
Ironwood received a $10,000
check from the Ironwood -
Hurley Rotary club. The good
news of this very generous
donation was quickly over
shadowed by apparently bad
news regarding the progress
of the park.
For the second time within a
week city officials have
reported that the DNR grant
for the skateboard park had
been turned down. Monday
evening Scott Erickson,
Ironwood City Manager stated
the city would go on with
the project on its own. Was
this mis-information by the
city manager just one more
error or just one more
cover-up?

City Screws
Up
Grant Application

Ironwoodinfo
has been in contact with the
DNR grant examiner since
early June tracking the
progress of the skateboard
park. The grant was not
rejected out right. The
grant was only rejected
temporarily until an
earlier screw up by Noren/Erickson
can be repaired.
Unfortunately, new comer Dan
Peterson (Community
Development Director) must
clean up the mess left by
his predecessor Pat Merrill,
city manager Scott Erickson
and the mayor Bruce Noren.
Noren's string of losses
seems to keep growing.
The Noren government has a
grant outstanding since
2005. A grant was submitted by
Pat Merrill for a bizarre
land deal and was approved
the DNR. The DNR had set the
money aside waiting for the
city to claim it. The money
($6,800) has been
sitting in Lansing for the
past five years just waiting
for Ironwood to claim it.

Will City
Kids Pay
or will Erickson ? |
 |
Several
questions that need
answering:
Is the city covering up to
hide the details of the
clandestine land purchase
behind the grant?
How could the city treasurer
lose track of a $6300
receivable?
How could the city manager
lose track of a $6300
receivable?

needs 4 months to close out
the fiscal year ended June
30th. |
Why is the city foregoing
the DNR grant money? Are
they lying about the grant
just to cover up their ineptness? If so, why should
the kids of Ironwood be the
only losers in this deal?
Was the Daily Globe
part of the cover up or
just another victim of the lies?
How many more items like
this one hanging around city
hall?
You may recall when Pat
Merrill left Ironwood for
parts unknown, the city
council gave him great
reviews at his last council
meeting. The only thing
missing were roses thrown at
his feet!
If Pat was as great at his
job as Noren
said he was, than why was
Pat passed over two times as city
manager by Noren ?
We all remember that the
city's first choice, Will
Andreasen , he turned down the
position when it was offered
to him. Iron County's gain,
Ironwood's loss.
On the second go
around Erickson was then
selected by Noren and one of
his relatives on the city
council. Both times
Merrill's application was
rejected by Noren.
Pat Merrill was recently
hired as a city manager for
a Colorado city nearly five
times the size of Ironwood.
He will still earn
substantially less than
Ironwood's Erickson managing
a significantly smaller
village. |

Civic Center Wins
Voter Approval |
 |
By a margin of more
than 2 to 1 city voters approved the renewal millage for
the Pat O'Donnell Civic Center. A significant vote of
confidence in job that Jimmy Sain is doing as the new
manager of the center. New ideas and tough decisions lay
ahead for Jim and the current Civic Center Board. Both
Jim and the board are up to the task. Congratulations to
all for saving this Ironwood Corner Stone for our
citizen's continued enjoyment.

Harleys
Roar! |
 |
Wisconsin is where Harleys roar and
thousands of motorcycles dotted the freeways
Wednesday to get to Milwaukee.
It’s where Harley-Davidson’s 105th
anniversary bash begins in earnest today. It
runs through Saturday, with more than
100,000 visitors expected.
The highlight is a Bruce Springsteen concert
and there are dozens of events which include
custom motorcycle build-off competitions.
But not all Harley riders are there to
party.
Debbie Argel of California lost her son
Derek in Iraq. She used her pilgrimage to
Milwaukee to raise money for the children of
Special Forces killed on duty.
For others, the celebration is simply a
homecoming.
Christina Wildlake used to live in the Green
Bay area, but she now calls northern
California home. She took up biking after a
major illness. Now, she says it’s a
celebration every time she takes a ride.
It’s no secret that Harley lovers have
emotional connections to their bikes,
especially those in middle age.
The average age of a Harley rider is 46,
while other bikers are typically in their
mid-30s. |
