DeMasi Sworn In As
Newest DIDA Member

The Downtown Ironwood Development Authority gained a new member this week as Louise Demassi was sworn in as its newest member. At the same meeting three other members submitted their resignations in absentia, Don Hitt, Rachael Hubbard Librarian Elaine Erickson. Absenteeism has been a serious problem at DIDA which has not had a quorum for quite some time.. Globe editor Joe Karius and Bruce Noren. were also absent.
There was a full, ambitious agenda for the meeting. A lot of time was spent on the discussion of signage for Ironwood. Three wayfarer signs were approved. One more to be placed near Walmart will be discussed again and acted upon in the future.. The fifth and final sign is to be placed in the Pocket Park. A final decision on that sign is in abeyance awaiting input from the Range Master Gardeners who care and maintain the Pocket Park.

Everyone present thought that signs should be purchased indicating the whereabouts of downtown Public Restrooms. Everyone except City Manager Scott Erickson who suggested that maps could be printed showing the whereabouts of the Public Restroom. Public Rest rooms are available downtown at the following locations: The Public Safety Building, The Depot, The Bus Station, The Memorial Building and the Public Library. The Library located on Aurora has a public restroom on the first floor which was once open to the public. It has recently made off limits to the public (including taxpayers) and is now used exclusively the library staff and the not so friendly "Friends of the Library."

A great deal of time was used to discuss the flower baskets that adorn the downtown area during the summer months. There were guests at the meeting who objected to the spending of tax revenues on the "Downtown Beautification Project". It was learned that the money actually spent on the baskets comes from donations by downtown merchants. However, it was also learned that, the funds for maintaining and watering the baskets is derived from taxes. DIDA has enough money in their "Basket Fund" to buy this year's flowers. They will approved a motion to solicit donations again this year hoping to raise enough money for care and watering of the baskets.
