According to Ironwood Treasurer Julie Fredrickson the
Library Fund is 40% over budget. That certainly is an
understatement. Fredrickson's own accounts show that as of
March 31, 2008 the Ironwood Library has received $95,581 in
revenues and has incurred $160,,021 in expenses. The figures
indicate that the Librarian, Elaine Erickson has spent
$64,440 more than revenues received. The Penal Fines
when received will offset a great deal of the current
deficit, however, there are three months of expenditures
still remaining in the fiscal year. The librarian, has spent
more than $60,000 in the past quarter alone. City treasurer
Fredrickson told the city council that there are grants yet
to be received. But of course it was also Fredrickson who
stated last year that a portion of the budgeted revenues for
the cemetery were not moved into the library fund. The year
end audit shows otherwise.. Even if what she says about
future grant money is so, there better be a sizeable
receivable on the books. Spending thousands of dollars
without any money in the account is a kin to buying a new
car on credit while waiting for your tax refund. It's no
wonder the Carnegie crowd is pushing the Township into a
contract renewal, the not so friendly friend$ have spent
themselves into a corner. How could this happen? It happens
because anyone in a position to control the problem is also
a part of the problem.
The alledged Friend$ of the library no longer have to behave
as a shadow government , as a result of last fall's elections, Ironwood's not so Friendly Friend$ of the Library now control the
city government; In fact, through a loophole in the
Open Meetings Act the Friend$ can now meet in secret
meetings. As we know, last year the city council was
investigated by the State Attorney General's office for
alleged violations of the Open Meetings Act.
Friend$ of the LIbrary now responsible for library
expenditures.
