Memorial Day observances began early Monday morning at
the Memorial Monument in Ontonagon Village. A color guard
and rifle squad was there as part of the contingent from
VFW post 5600, Ontonagon. There was a prayer followed by a
salute to the fallen by the rifle squad.
Patriotic music was performed by the Ontonagon High School
Band under the directorship of Mr. Ben Mayer. Trumpet
players Emily Shiner and Abby Sewell did a wonderful job
of playing "Taps" with echo.
The O.A.S. Band was just warming up for a day which was to
be cool if not cold and one of reasonably dense fog. The
band would board a bus and head to the town of Rockland.
Rockland - Ontonagon County." a small community large on
remembrance" The Memorial Day observances began at "Irish
Hollow Cemetery" where the fog added a mysterious
atmosphere to the surroundings.
The members of the Milton G. Priess American Legion post
number 92 provided the color guard, chaplain and rifle
squad for the ceremonies. Prayers and wreath laying
ceremony were followed by Taps, played by bugler Andy
Bussiere. The rifle squad provided the salute to the

The Irish Hollow Cemetery is a place we all should visit.
Some of the grave sites go back to a time that dates
around the Civil War era. Many people interned at Irish
Hollow could have and may have been combatants in that
war.

The augmented contingency moved on to the beautiful
Ontonagon County Veterans Memorial. Where onlookers
gathered to watch and participate in the observances. The
Legionnaires repeated the proceedings that were performed
at Irish Hollow.
The ceremony at the county Memorial was followed by a
small parade that was big in heart The Ladies Auxiliary of
the Post 92 joined the men in the parade.
The music was terrific. The Ontonagon High School Band
showed that playing well trumps big every time! By the
way, congrats to the Baritone Sax player, you did a great
job.
After the parade was over everyone moved on to the larger
ceremonies which were to take place at Woodland Cemetery.
There speeches were made, one by Pastor John West of Saint
Pauls Lutheran Church in Mass City. A wreath was laid at
the monument by Comrade Moynahan and the Ontonagon High
School Band once again provided Patriotic Marches.
