Florence July 24, 2009
Firefighters are Heating U.P. South of the border is this year's theme for
the U.P. Firefighters Annual Tournament.
For the first time in it's history, the U.P. Firefighters are holding the
annual tournament outside the state of Michigan. This year Florence,
Wisconsin will host the 115th Upper Michigan Volunteer Firefighter's
Tournament. Next year the event move back across the border to Munising.
Florence Volunteer Firefighters have been members, of the U.P. Association
and have also competed in the Annual events. In 2007, at the request of
the Florence Firefighters, the city was awarded this year's event.
Florence has been a great host city and its Vols. Have been doing a great
job in getting things accomplished.
The dress Parade Thursday evening was quite a parade indeed. There were
dozens of fire departments participating, and the cities, townships and
villages of the Western U.P. were well represented.
In addition to the firefighters, there were three wonderful musical
organizations marching in the parade. The Superior Pipes and Drums,
Marty's Goldenaires and marching in front of the Ishpeming firefighters
was the Blue Notes Drum & Bugle Corps. They were all very, very good and
provided much enjoyment to the parade.
Last evening after the Dress Parade downtown Florence, an evening full of
food, music and dancing, took place. The evening theme was South of the
Border. There was a large turnout of citizens from Florence, making the
night an even bigger success.
Friday the games begin. Each organization seeking to bring home a trophy
and one year's worth of bragging rights for the tournament .
