Ironwood Township - September 14, 2009 Saturday was the
Gogebic-Iron County Fly-In and Mother Nature finally cooperated and
there was perfect weather for the event.
There was of course planes coming and going all day, but there were
other things happening as well. There was a great deal of entertainment
including music by John Keating, (always a treat), rides, games and
amusements for kids of every age. There was a flea market including arts
and crafts for sale.
The Klassic Kruisers were on hand with some their fine classic
automobiles.
There were raffles and a contest being held to rename the airport. Which
assumes that the airport need renaming. Let’s hope that the winning name
is something wild and different such as “Gogebic – Iron County Airport”!
That way at least people will know where the heck the airport is
located. What a complex thought!
This was a day of flying in and out up and down. It was quite nice. For
a very reasonable sum, you could take either a plane or a helicopter
flight, which many people took advantage of this warm and clear day.
Members of the Civil Air Patrol came by air and by land to the fly-in.
Members of the Superior Squadron flew to the airport, while Captain Alan
Scmitz and Lt. Carol Schmitz, members of the Eagle River Composite
Squadron, drove in with their awesome mobile command center.
Last but not least there was food! A pancake breakfast was served in the
morning and sandwiches and dogs were served up in the afternoon.
The airport staff and volunteers did a terrific job in staging this
event, which resulted in a great day for all the friends, family and
guests that attended this year’s Fly-In.
