2 pkgs. yeast
1/4 c. warm water (105 to 115 degrees)
2 1/2 c. milk
1 1/2 c. sugar
1 tsp. cardamom, crushed
1 c. butter
1 tsp. salt
6 to 8 c. flour
3 eggs
Egg whites (opt.)

Dissolve yeast in warm water. Over medium heat combine milk,
sugar, butter and salt. Cool to lukewarm. Stir in 1 cup flour
and beat well. Add yeast mixture, eggs and cardamom. Add enough
of the remaining flour to make a soft dough and mix well. Turn
dough into a greased bowl and cover. Let rise about 2 hours,
until doubled. Punch down dough and let rest 10 minutes. Divide
dough into 6 portions and form balls. Roll each ball into a
rope. Braid 3 ropes to form a loaf. Repeat process with
remaining ropes of dough. Place on baking sheets, brush with egg
whites if desired. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes or
until golden.
