Lake Gogebic - August 10, 2009 Not all the water was in the Lake
yesterday, as firefighters competed in the annual "Water Barrel
Fights" held at the LGVFD hall.
Pumper trunks were pumping away as the firefighters took aim at
the tiny keg dangling from a wire suspended high above. While this
was a day of fun and fundraising, it was comforting to know that
even the newest firemen could hit the smallest of targets, should
the need arise.
The day was filled with activity for those attending the 2009
Lake Gogebic Firefighters Picnic. The turnout was good although
slightly down from years past. None the less you needed to park down
the road on route 64 in order to find a parking space.
There were many auctions going on throughout the afternoon. There
was a raffle or auction to meet the craving of any auction goer.
The kids had a good time too!. Two holding dams served up as a
kiddy wading pool and another was used to hold the frogs that the
kids were hunting down.
There was some great music too! "Easy Money" from Ontonagon
was on hand playing country sounds all afternoon, including the
dancing which followed the "Water Barrel Fights"
Teams from Ironwood, Manitowish Waters and Lake Gogebic fire
departments competed for a trophy and one year's bragging rights.
Two almost all ladies teams also competed against each other. There
was a shortage of female competitors and a couple of male ringers
were forced into battle.
Firefighters, Berquist, Manchester and Carlson, from Manitowish
Waters took no pity on on the LGV firefighters team 1,
Skrobot, Ryalla, and Barting. The Manitowish firefighters
would face off against the Ironwood firefighters who defeated the
LGV firefighters in match number two. Ken, Notch and Curtis,
went up against LGVFD 2 team, Nakula, Hoeft and Lowery.
The final competition between Manitowish Waters and Ironwood was
a very close match. In the end it was The Ironwood Volunteers who
would go home with the trophy. The MWVFD fought a great match and
vow to take the trophy home next year.
