Calumet - August 15, 2009 The theme for this year's Heritage
Festival was Italian. The festival is in its seventh year. The
festival is the creation of Lucy Nakkula, Calumet D.D.A. member.
Lucy and the DDA have been working on reviving Calumet's
downtown district. Calumet has chosen to go through the "Main Street
Program", a program similar to Ironwood's Blueprints program, but is
more structured and has more accountability attached to it.
This years heritage festival was designed to bring people to the
downtown. The event takes place in the town park. The event included
games for kids and adults alike. The kids played old fashion
games such as potato sack races. Adults engage in sport such as
horseshoes. Speaking of horses, Horse drawn wagons provided tours of
the downtown.
There were bikes everywhere as the "The Great Deer Mountain Bike
Race" took place in downtown. Imagine no mountains nor trails.
Watching the racers get ready for one of the heats, I noticed the
riders strapping devices to their ankles. I asked if they were under
house arrest. Of course not! Those devices were computer chips used
to score the race. High end scoring devices to go with the high end
bikes that these little kids were peddling. |
