2009 - Gogebic County Fair

Fair Has New Face For 2009

After last years the Gogebic County Fair Board made a decision that the amusement ride portion of the fair would change  for the 2009 event. The decision was made in order to bring more rides at an affordable price to Gogebic fair goers.

The Indianhead Amusement Co. was chosen as this provider for fair amusements. It was quite clear Saturday that the decision was a good one. For just $10. kids of all ages could enter the fair, view the exhibits and ride on or in the amusements rides all day and all night long.  Of course you might not want to ride all night long considering the great talent presented on the Big Stage.

The only dark cloud at this year's fair as the weather. However the sun came out Saturday and so did the crowds. Diner time a normally slower period during the day was anything but slow. The midway was packed with people most of whom were waiting on the many lines at the amusement rides.

This year's midway was the best yet. The switch to a new amusement provider was well received . The lines were long for some rides, however, no one seemed to care. The result was worth the wait.

At the Fair...

There was some irony to this year's fair. There was a large display of ATV's and Snowmobiles presented by Cloverland Motors of Ironwood. There also was a tent where the Unfriendly friend$ of the Carnegie gathered. This year they are promoting a Miners Memorial Park in the caves. They are hoping to evict all the kids on ATVs from the caves area, the streets and trails from in Ironwood.

Last year the very same group of Unfriendly Friend$ tried to evict the little "Ice Crystals" and "Polar Bears" from Ironwood's Civic Center. They might have succeeded had it not been for the steadfastness of City Councilmen Tom Laabs and City Council Woman Suzanne Toth.

The kids we interviewed were "amazed" that there was an organized effort against Ironwood's youth. They're not the only ones.

On the Big Stage...

This year's fair entertainment would be hard to be beat. Each night grandstand goers enjoyed some great entertainment. It all began Thursday night when Marty's Goldenaires entertained the grandstand crowd. They were followed by two great acts performing Friday night with singer Tom Katalin -on stage followed by   Country star Buddy Jewell. entertaining the fair crowd.

Buddy Jewell burst onto the country music scene in 2003 when he won the coveted title of USA Network’s first ever Nashville Star. A true crowd favorite from the premiere episode to the finale, TV audiences and critics alike fell in love with Buddy Jewell’s gentility, enthusiasm and true musical   passion.

Saturday evening we got to enjoy two wonderful performers Jimi Jamison and Alex Ligertwood came together in one great act/

Jimi Jamison’s voice led Survivor to three top ten songs, 5 top 20 songs, multiple major movie soundtracks and a main TV theme composition, "I'm Always Here", which he co-wrote and per-formed for the # 1 TV show worldwide, "Baywatch", solidifying his standing as one of the premier singers, writers, and performers in the music industry today.

Alex Ligertwood's voice is recognized literally the world over as the lead vocalist of Santana. For over 16 years with Carlos Santana, Alex provided his unique sound and interpretation on 12 albums. He earned Gold Records for four of those Santana efforts, and scored Top 40 hits with six albums and/or singles.
