Hurley - August 24, 2009

The Hurley Volunteer Firefighters held their 2009 annual picnic Saturday at Riccelli Park. Although the day started off a little on the cool side, it ultimately turned out to be a beautiful sunny "fall day".

The picnic was attended by Hurley Firefighters, family members, residents, and Firefighters from, Ironwood Township, Mercer, Montreal and Oma.

It was a fun filled family day, with something for every age group.

There were  games for the kids and games of chance for the older kids. At the end of the day there would be music for everyone, performed by Madd Trapper. Pictured above is Firefighter Mike Fontecchio. He called the numbers from the Wheel of Fortune, as well as announcing the Water Barrel fights.
Hurley Rescue Truck #804 was on hand for inspection, as well as trucks 803, 807, 885 and 894 . The kids really enjoyed touring the trucks.
The water barrel fights took place in the afternoon, under perfect weather conditions. The competition was a double elimination event. Hurley the host department fielded 2 teams, Montreal entered two teams, Ironwoood Township entered one team. Mercer on the other-hand came to wear down the competition, bringing three, yes three, highly trained, highly skilled teams. Their strategy proved to be good one if not perfect one. Mercer Team number one, was a clear and decisive winner. Hurley's number one team finished second and Mercer's number two team took home the third place trophy.  Pictured above s the Ironwood Township Team discussing  combat strategy.

Since this was a double elimination tournament, Mercer had to defeat Hurley twice in the final two matches of the day, and they did 2-0 and 2-1.

Mercer one team defeated its number two team to get into the Championship round., How's that for keeping it in the family. Hurley entered the Championship round by defeating its neighbors from Montreal.

The matches weren't the conclusion of picnic, but a jumping spot to the music and evening still ahead. The music was performed by the Madd Trappers
