Bessemer Considers Traffic Study

Bessemer - October 20, 2009

Much of last night's meeting was consumed by a discussion pertaining to conroling the speed limit on U.S. 2. It was thought that the current speed limit signage along the highway is inadequate either by placement or in number. The problem arises in that if the city formally requests that signs be either added or relocated a traffic study would be instituted by the State Police. The traffic control signage is under the province of MDOT however, MDOT may not act upon a request until the State Police Study is completed. The plot really thickens here as a study might result in a speed limit being increased. If that were to occur the signage question would be a mute point.

Speaking to the council was Allen Archie an advocate for changing the current signage. He also would like more signs along the highway.

Archie in his quest to reduce speeding along U.S. 2 attacked the quality and quantity of the reports that the city receives from the Gogebic Sheriff's Office. Archie pointed to the contractual obligation of the Sheriff to provide the city with monthly reports. He stated that the city is only receiving the reports quarterly and not as provided in the service agreement between the two parties. Archie went on to say that the information in the Sheriffs reports are inadequate. That they lack sufficient information with which one could make proper decisions. This of course begs the question "What difference does it make as to how often the reports are received. If they are as worthless as Archie states."

The discussion went round and round with Archie becoming more argumentative at each turn In the end the council voted to belay action on making a formal request for the signage changes. The matter is to be considered at the next city council meeting.

The city council continuing its efforts to curb blight within Bessemer, passed two condemnation resolutions. The property in each case was owned by an out of state individual.

Donald Saari, the city building inspector told the council that he had inspected the property and found that the building was open to environment, had rotten roof and eaves, siding falling off, foundation was caving in and was structurally unsound The home hadn’t been lived in for five years. The home had been declared a public nuisance or attractive nuisance under City Ordinances,

The second property acted upon was owned by William Jr. and Kimberlee Mahler, 243 Lincoln St., Stanley, WI. The property is located at 904 State Street. The council heard from Donald Saari, the city building inspector. He stated that he had inspected the property and found that the building was open to environment, had rotten roof and eaves, siding falling off, foundation was caving in and was structurally unsound The home hadn’t been lived in for five years.
