A.D. Johnson Students Commemorate Veteran's Day

 
Bessemer - November 12, 2009

Wednesday's Veteran's Day program began with music played by the A.D.Johnson High School Band. The band under the direction of Mrs. Mary Jo Mykkanen. The band played several patriotic tunes as the students and Honor Guard entered the gymnasium. The Presentation of the Flag was done by the V.F.W. and the V.F.W. Auxiliary Honor Guard.

Jack Roebuck, V.F.W. Commander (pictured above) first introduced U.S. Marine L/Cpl Colt St. Arnold, who is home after two tours of Iraq.

 

Commander Roebuck then introduced R.O.T.C. Cadets, Bessemer Dan Sackman, Evan Czerneski, Packard Johnson, Roger Gustafson and Amelia Sachman,

After the Band played the Star Spangled Banner the audience listened to the opening remarks by Commander Roebuck, the program’s Master of Ceremonies.

 

The Keynote Speaker, S/Sgt Thomas Stroh detailed the actions that led up to two soldiers who had won the Medal of Honor while fighting in the Mid-East. The A. D. Johnson band then performed the Military Medley. As the band played veterans and members of the Armed Forces stood up when their branch anthem was played.

 

Following the band performance the audience was treated to wonderful rendition of “Keep the Home Fires Burning”. The slightly updated version of the War World I classic was performed by the students of the Washington School They did an absolutely great job under the direction of their director Mr. Roderick.

The program then included recognition of Washington School Students who are responsible for the daily flag raising. They are Julia Dahlin, Catlyn Pelissero, and Rachel Kellas.

 

 

Commander Roebuck then read the Roll Call of those Bessemer Veterans deceased in the past year.
