First 2009 HSB Victory For Ironwood
Marquette - November 22, 2009

The Ironwood Red Devils made their first 2009 season TV appearance on WMNUTV’s High School Bowl. As always, the match actually occurred several weeks ago and are aired at a later date. While we knew the results of the match, we prefer to hold off announcing the game results until after its first viewing.

The Red Devils competed against Superior Central, a team they played against last season. The results would be all too familiar for SC, who lost to Ironwood 230-210 this past February.

The game began with the Red Devils jumping out front of the Cougars 30-0. However, the Cougars would take the lead at the halfway mark 90-70. Ironwood would out score Superior Central 50-20 in the third quarter to take the lead 110-90. In the fourth and final quarter, the Red Devils again outscored the Cougars 90-30, and thus winning the match 200-120.

Saturday's show closed with Cole Stevens words to live by "You miss one hundred percent of the shots you don't take"

After winning the first round match, Ironwood now moves on to the second round where they will meet Gwinn, last year’s HSB Champions. It was Ironwood that Gwinn’s men in Black defeated in the championship round. The good news is that Gwinn’s championship team were all seniors and have moved on to other endeavors. The bad news, Gwinn drew a bye in the first round so we don’t know what they’re all about this year.

Ironwood won the recent Quiz Bowl Tournament held at GCC prior to winning Saturday’s HSB match. Do you suppose these coaches watch game films?

The Red Devils will be without their great coach, Steve Boyd when they go to Marquette to face Gwinn. However, Steve has a most competent replacement standing in the wings. Stephanie Mazzon, LLW Chemistry teacher and big Quiz Bowl supporter will go in Steve’s place.

HSB Update (aired games): So far this year, only one local team has been eliminated, and that was the Hurley Midgets, who fell to Ontonagon in a game that aired on October 24th.

Bessemer won its first Marquette match up by defeating Big Bay de Noc in a game that also aired on October 24th. Those fortunate enough to tune in on October 24 were treated to two matches featuring three of our local teams. This season other local teams, Watersmeet and Wakefield-Marenisco, each had a first round bye. It was these two teams that one of last year’s most exciting games. Perhaps we’ll see them square off once again.
