Ironwood - December 21, 2009 The Ironwood Quiz Bowl team
went to Marquette this past week to compete against their
counterparts from Gwinn. It was the same two schools that met in
the High School Bowl Championship Game last winter. The Gwinn
team bested the Red Devils in that match, but it was a new story
with a different ending Wednesday. By the buzzer rang ending the
match the score was Ironwood 250 Gwinn 80.
Wednesday the Red Devil coach Steve Boyd was unable to
accompany the team to Marquette. However, Steve placed the team
in the competent hands of Stephanie Mazzon, who obviously did
all that could have been asked of her.
Luther L. Wright principal, Tim Kolesar told us that he
believed that this year’s team was an even stronger team than
last year’s great team.
The Gwinn match will be aired on WMNUTV on Saturday January
23rd. An Encore presentation is usually the following Sunday or
Monday.
The Red Devils will return to Marquette in Mid-February to
oppose the winner of the Gladstone-West Iron Game.
Bessemer won its second round match two weeks ago against
Brimley. Another big victory. That game airs January 2nd.
At this point last year, we went out on a limb and correctly
predicted the two teams that would meet in the final match. This
year it’s a little more difficult. Ironwood and Bessemer are in
different brackets, which holds out the possibility that the two
teams could meet in the Championship Game. Wouldn’t that be
great?
