Ironwood - October 22, 2008 |
The Ironwood Carnegie Library held it's
regular monthly board meeting yesterday. Due to
the busy traffic in the main library reading
rooms the board meeting was held in the kid's
room. |

Library Diector, Elaine Erickson provides
board with a material for the full agenda
|
There was a full agenda of items to be
discussed ranging from fundraising to fee
schedules for visitors and other temporary users
of the library. With respect to fundraising
the Library Board is developing a list of
donors, from whom the library board will solicit
donations directly. The board will solicit
contributions separately from the Friends
of the Library, with each group seeking funds
for different purposes. Mrs. Erickson is
working on a letter which delineates the need
for additional funding caused by the
expected reduction in government funding
sources. |

Library Board Losing Valued Member |
The board discussed the
possibility of changing the term served by board
members which is currently set at five years.
Members of the board feel that this may be a bit
too long. It was noted that the term may not be
changed without changing the city charter. The
board will look further into this matter. |
Marianne Andresen pictured above
sitting to right of Chairperson Margaret Rayner
has advised the board that she will not seek
another turn on the Carnegie Board. It was
Mrs. Andresen who was largely responsible for
the successfully resolving the impasse in the
library's contract negotiations with Ironwood
Township. |
In other matters the board
approved the bid from Beaver Tree Service to
remove the Spruce tree whose roots are
threatening the building structure. The
board hopes to replace the Spruce with a
flowering tree. |
The board also approved a bid
from Ironwood Glass to replace three windows in
the Building. All but these three windows were
replaced in 1985. The windows to be replaced are
wood and are rotting and of course are not
efficient. The window replacement will closely
match the other windows. |
Library fees for temporary
members and visitors was discussed but, not not
acted upon at this time. Board members will seek
out information as to how other boards deal with
this matter. The board expects to provide a free
pass for GCC students and that the pass will
expire at the beginning of the following
school year. |
Library director Elaine Erickson
informed the board of the many grants that she
has sought. There is a $2,000 grant coming
from Excel Energy promoting arts for young
students. Mrs. Erickson believes that the
purpose of this grant goes back to the library's
roots.
Mrs. Erickson stated that she is awaiting
word on a grant ($5000) which would be used for
a kids summer program.
Yet to be applied for but has a high priority
will be applying for a $54,000 grant which
will create mini libraries in elementary school
classrooms. |
Mrs. Rayner discussed her
participation in a meeting of the Superior Land
Co-op., which can now provide On Line Book
Service. It will provide service as does the
library at this time. You can swipe your card
and order a book live on line. The book will be
downloaded to your computer and you will be
allowed to maintain it for two weeks. You may then read it at your leisure.
After two weeks you will no longer be able to
keep the book on your computer which will then be blown up
and disabled (JUST KIDDING) Mrs. Rayner
advised the board that for the past year
our library was a rotational voting member of
the co-op. Going forward another library will
replace our library as a voting member and we will continue as a
non-voting member for the coming year. |
The Ironwood Carnegie Library
will be advertising for applicants to fill the
vacancy created when Mrs. Andresen's term
expires. Mrs. Andresen represents city
residents on the board, therefore applicants for
this position must reside within the Ironwood
city limits. |
