Ontonagon River to be Dredged Earlier

Ontonagon - November 12, 2008
The Ontonagon County Economic Development Board held it's monthly meeting at the Candlelight Resteraunt Wednesday evening. Due to the special meeting of the Ontonagon County Board Meeting held at the same time , meeting space at the county courthouse became scarce. Very Scarce.
Among the several topics discussed at the meeting was the dredging of the Ontonagon River this past year. To be specific the "very late dredging" of the river. As a consequence of that late dredging, coal was delivered late to the Smurfit-Stone   coal docks thus setting back the manufacturers schedule. It was not clear that whether or not the late shipments is the cause of the six week layoffs at Smurfit-Stone scheduled to begin within the next two weeks.

The late dredging did however, result in many complaints being filed to the U.S. Army Corps. of Engineer. On November 3, 2008 Chief Engineer and Chief Officer, Wayne Schloop sent a letter to Mary K. Smith of the OEDC. In his letter, Schloop recognizes the the 2008 dredging problem and advised that he intended to award future dredging contracts earlier. Additionally, the contract will include a provision reducing the allowable completion time to earlier in the season. Read Corps of Engineer letter

Other items reviewed included the review of the 2007-2008 Ontonagon County Revolving Loan Fund Status Report.  The report indicates that $158,244 is available in the fund for future use. Read the RLF status report

The board discussed the December 3  Wind Energy Workshop to be held at Michigan Tech. The total cost per member to attend the meeting would be $76.

A serious discussion took place regarding the safety of coal pile on the EDC docks.

Bruce Johanson  stated that "he was concerned that the pile which was intended for the White Pine Electric Power Company in White Pine, has not been "stirred." that internal combustion could cause fires inside the idle piles".

Do you suppose that if the coal pile sits long enough that they may find some diamonds on the bottom of that pile?
