Bessemer Students
Spread Christmas Joy

The students in the Bessemer School Districts are participating in several programs designed to spread Christmas Tidings and Joy both locally and around the world.

The board was advised of three Christmas projects that the district students will be participating in.
The students have completed their participation in the Channel 6 Can-a-thon and will participate in two more programs for the season. Students from the A.D. Johnson will participate in the Red Cross program to send 1 million Christmas Cards to our soldiers over seas. Locally, the students will participate in the Memorial Building Christmas Party. In this Party students assist parents select gifts maintained on two tables. One table will hold brand new gifts. Parents will be selecting one gift from that table. A second table will hold used gifts. Each family may select as many gifts from that table as they so choose. The Bessemer students will escort the families to the tables and help them select their gifts.

Bessemer - November 25, 2008

The Bessemer School Board held its regularly scheduled meeting Monday. This is the first meeting since the November 6th election. It was not mentioned whether or not the district received a letter from the county clerk as did the neighboring district in Ironwood. The letter received by I.A.S.D. was a formal notice that the consolidation ballot issue had failed. Unlike the mood in the Ironwood board room the mood in Bessemer was definitely upbeat. That's not to say that the Bessemer board wasn't facing some gloomy monetary challenges in the days and months ahead. However, with the election over it also means that the bashing from the west was also over and that meant it was back to the business of education and staying out of deficit.
The district paid off their share of a lawsuit filed against the Bessemer Township by Enbridge Energy LP. While making the approximately $17,500 payment was not great news except for the fact that Enbridge originally sought a $50,000 judgment in the case. Enbridge alleged that it had been over charged for it's personal property tax.

The board approved a payment to U.S. Bank for ADJ HS Debt Retirement account in the amount of $26,167.50 .
A payment to Erickson Siding and Roofing in the amount of $4,200 was also approved for work done on the Band Shell. It was decided however, that the check be held until the work was completed.

The board approved an agreement to participate in the Michigan Retirement Investment Consortium Board, which will administer the employee 403(B) retirement accounts

Good news for the food service account which showed a modest profit.

The A.D.J teachers are considering an alternative to study hall. The hope is that next year a class such as Economics could be used to replace the current study hour.

An interesting discussion arose surrounding the purchase of sports jerseys. The district uses a rotational method for purchasing uniforms and it was suggested that some jerseys could be used for two consecutive years rather than being replace annually. The boys basketball team receives two sets of uniforms from the school and fundraising provides the athletes with a third uniform.
Tim France mentioned that the district should look into purchasing uniforms locally as did Wakefield-Marenisco. The W-M district saved $1,000 by buying locally and having the print work done in Hurley.

The district will consider acquisition of a weather alert system for parents and students. Schoolannouncement.com provides weather and other emergency alerts to parents of school children. It can notify parents either by e-mail or by telephone. The Hurley school has a similar program for PK-12 and it costs $1200. Take a peak at the website www.schoolannouncement.com . Interesting, si?
Mark Johnson reported a rise in parent participation at this year's Parent Teacher Conferences. Gene Goss reported great participation as well for the Washington School
