The Next Generation's Next Step

Ironwood - December 11, 2008

James Lorenson, President of G.C.C. welcomes the large group of people who came to take the Next Step for the Next Generation. Jim quoted Margaret Mead, once called "Mother of the World", by Time Magazine in 1969

Mead is famous for her quote "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

The purpose of the meeting held at G.C.C. was to follow up on the October presentation by Rebecca Ryan titled "The Next Generation", how to attract young people to our community and how to keep the community's young people from leaving the area.

After adressing the group Mr. Lorenson introduced Will Andresen to the audience who then went on and presented the audience with the "Brutal Facts" pertaining to the sixty plus years of population decline.

After an interesting Power Point Presentation, Will asked the audience to divide themselves into into four breakout groups depending on their interests Each Group had one or more team leaders who would guide them through goal setting and informational gathering.

The first group, "Retain Existing Students (high school/college)" – was led by Gloria Fauerbach
The second group, Attract New Young Workers by Promoting our Assets – was led by Dan Petersen

The third group,  Attract New Young Workers by Developing our Niche (Outdoor, nature-based adventure sports) – was led by Clyde Eilo
The fourth group,  Retain Young Professionals by Better Connecting them to the Community (The “YP Club” idea) – was led by Lily Palmer and Marcy Kusz

Will is displaying a slide which compares the top five Ideal Factors for chosing a placeto live.. The groups used in the comparisons were , Michigan residents, "Natives", people who have lived here all their lives, "Boomerangers", Those who left this area and then returned and "Transplants".  The depicted groups largely chose the same five top factors although not necessarily in the exact  order. The only exception being Scenic Beauty", which ranked 8th among "Natives" .  Not surprising was that "jobs" replaced scenic beauty in their top five.
Mr. Andresen presented the audience with the results of a recent survey conducted among area high school and college students.  That survey a long with other data was presented as "The Brutal Facts".  One of those facts is that Only 10.3 percent of local people surveyed viewed our community as an attractive place for 20- and 30-year-olds to live and work.

Will provided at least 24 slides in his Power Point Presentation. You can view those slides and listen to an audio of Mr. Andresen's presentation.
