Heikinpäivä Celebrates
Winter
In a Big Big Way
|
2009 Heikinpäivä
Parade |
 |
Spectators anxiously waiting the start of the
parade ignored the 2 degree temperatures and
focused on the great day of fun that laid ahead. |
 |
 |
The sign reads "Just a Few Random Flakes!" That
sums it alright!

Heikinpäivä "Fun Park".
The Fun Park would be the venue for the
"wife carrying contest", the "boot
throwing contest" , skip sleds and whipsleds
and of course roasting marshmallows on
an open fire.

 |
The Wife Carrying
Contest |
 |
The race begins with the Husband (relatively
speaking) takes off from the starting line
carrying his wife using any form imaginable. |
 |
The first stop is outside the sauna where the
wife unrolls and shakes out three rag rugs and
places them on the ground.

HANCOCK - January
24, 2009
With the temperature
a 2 degrees and a 20
below windchill,
approximately fifty
fearless individuals
took the plunge into the
ice covered Portage
Canal. Among those
hardy individuals was
Finlandia President, Dr.
Phillip Johnson, Ph.D.
Dr. Johnson took the
plunge to help raise
money for charity. The
Polar Bear Dive came at
the end of a long day of
activities. |

Ontonagon Bureau Chief ,
Linda Graham is on the
Finnish Theme
Committee.
According to Linda
"The earty Finlanders
can get that sauna
jacked up to 250 degrees
once they get that warm,
they head out and jump
in a snow bank or a
lake. So here, we're
trying to carry on that
tradition since we have
the canal right here in
Hancock." (hmm)
Heikinpaiva is in its
10th year and organizers
say no matter how cold
it gets, the tradition
will live on.
