above and below represent the ingredients of
lawn care. These ingredients may vary depending
on what qaulity lawn you want. A high quality
lawn requires more maintenance and more expense.
The above slide shows the seasonal cycle of a
lawn. For our area however, the first four
months would be compressed. Otherwise, the
remaining season would be similar.
Before applying fetilizer or other amendments
such as lime you should have a soil test. The
procedure is slightly different than that of
testing a garden bed. A lawn test should
include samples from approximately twenty
locations with samples taken three inches deep.
A high maintenance lawn should be fertilized on
the holiday schedule. Fertilizing on Memorial
Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day and Halloween.
In the above photo Jim is pointing to graphic
the shows that higher mowing heights favor root
and rhizome growth.
Below - graphic demonstrates a method to
determine if your lawn is getting an adequate
supply of water. Place cans around the area
being watered and measure the water in the can.

above watering preferences. When watering, it is
preferable to water deeply which will encourage
proper root development.
The best time to sow a lawn is in the fall. If
you use a mix containing annual grass seeds do
not fertilize with a fall mix containing a
pre-emergent weed killer. Otherwise, the fall is
the best time for a weed and feed fertilizer
mix.
above - a good way to seed or fertilize your
lawn with a drop spreader. Divide your materials
in half. Use half the amount spreading in an
east - west direction. Then use the remaining
half spreading in a north - west direction. If
you measured corectly there shouldn't be any
left over nor should run out of material before
finishing.
Power Aerators are available in our area at
rental equipment dealers.
In addition to the M.S.U. resource we also
have a Wisconsin Extension Office located in the
Iron County Courthouse.
