Bessemer Students
Decorate Sophie Street |
|
Bessemer - June 3, 2009
The fifth grade students of Washington School went to Bessemer City
Hall yesterday. There they teamed up with members of the Range
Master Gardeners and set out to beautify Sophie Street for the
summer months. Mrs.Malmberg students filled 18 large planter boxes
with red, white and blue flowers and planted flowers in three
gardens outside city hall.
The project was under the direction of Bessemer Master Gardener
Bonnie Maki and assisted by several other Michigan and Wisconsin
Master Gardeners. All the Master Gardeners are members of the local
gardening organization, the Range Master Gardeners. This is the
second gardening project involving Washington School students to
take place in within the past week. Last Thursday the fourth graders
planted flowers around their school.
The fifth graders were already up on the aspects of the project as
last year they were the fourth graders that planted at Washington
School.
Mrs. Malmberg's kids did a terrific job on this very large gardening
endeavor. Tom Chatel, the city manager came to speak to the students
and thank them for the wonderful job that they had done. The kids,
planted, watered and mulch the gardens which will be looking really
good before too long. The city workers will move the large flower
boxes with a fork lift to their positions up and down Sophie Street.
Last year, some of the boxes were moved to the entrance of the
Moving Wall exhibit. Each year the results of this project is a
great looking downtown Bessemer. |
