Scouts Take to the Sky

Story by Bruce Jendusina

Ironwood - June 4, 2009

This past weekend the Boy Scouts of Troop 337 of Ontonagon, Marinesco, Wakefield, Bessemer, and Ironwood along with their families were treated to a day at the Gogebic Iron County Airport.

Everyone was treated to a scenic flight courtesy of Peter Palm (of the soon to open Maple Wood Steak House of Ironwood), Peter Koruga of Koruga and son Contracting and Building Supply and Aaron Ruotsala of Ruotsala General Contracting.

After their flight, Airport Manager Duane Duray went through a pre-flight check on an airplane. Also Duane explained the principles of flight, thrust and the mechanics and working of a plane.

The scouts were able to interview the pilots of Great Lakes Airlines, and TSA about security at the airport. They then visited the crash barn that houses the fire trucks and the snow plows for the landing strips.

With the help of all these people the Boy Scouts were able to earn the Aviation Merit Badge. Many thank to everyone who helped.
