Ironwood Township - June 10, 2009 Town Supervisor,
Kim Mattson advised that the Township's first cleanup day, held on
Saturday, was a complete success. There was a great turnout and
thanked everyone who helped ou along with Hilborn's scrap metal.
Approximately one hundred people showed up and scrap was picked up
at another twenty-five home. Bernie Brunello also stated that there
were many good reports on the project. Bob Fredrickson told Kim hat
she should be commended for the job she did.
The only committee report came from Bernie Brunello and it was
pertaining to the Gogebic-Iron County Wastewater Authority/Board. He
stated that there have been many meeting (on the budget) and that
they were getting close to finalizing it. That they were still
working on their Union Contract.
Chief Peite gave the Fire Department report.
He told the board that the Fire Department had been approached by
the Regional Hospice, requesting that the department water the
flowers at the park. The department has done this in the past. The
treasurer, Jyl Olson asked that she informed as to how much water
was used so that they could get a credit on the sewer usage.
Chief Peite, also asked the board if they could help with the
payment for the new SCBA gear. The fire fighters have been holding
fundraisers purchase the equipment. The board voted unanimously to
split the remainder ($1200) and pay $600 toward the equipment. The
volunteer firefighters are holding a Father's Day fundraiser. It
will be a steak dinner held at Mel's Bar.
The Firemen are requesting a millage which would be used to purchase
a new truck. A first line Pumper to replace the aging number 10. The
price for a new Pierce would be around $500,000. However, a truck
such as Wakefield's new truck could be garnered for around $180,000.
There is also a three year old refurbished unit available. The board
requested the Chief to bring estimates to the next board meeting.
The board discussed estimates for repairing the roads. Estimates for
this year's repairs are $48,000. The budget only has $50,000 for the
repairs and for dust control. This would mean that only $2,000 was
available for the dust control which will cost $3,500.
Bernie suggested that maybe the residents receiving the dust control
pay a special assessment to make up the difference. However, Kathy
Maki reminded the board, that the savings derived from reductions in
hospitalization costs and pension costs were to be used for road
work.
The board received a communication from Simmons and Winkowski
requesting that they be put on the agenda to speak to the board.
Their fax did not contain any information regarding the topic of
their speech or speeches.
Mark McDonald the Township attorney advised the board that the law
does give the public any rights to speak at the meeting other than
the Public Comments section, as defined by the board. He, McDonald
also stated that personal attacks are not permitted nor are they
allowed to disrupt the meetings.
When asked what would they like to talk about Simmons stated that
his "group" were advised not to say anything. Too bad the Township's
Frick and Frack were not advised of that six months ago.
The board voted unanimously to restrict the duo to the three minutes
permitted under public comments.
With no other business to be discussed the board adjourned the
meeting. |
