Ironwood - June 20, 2009Last evening, parents friends and other music lovers gather in the "Gymtorium" at Luther L. Wright. They all came to hear the annual "Summer Band Concert". The sumer band program brings together 5th through 8th grade musicians from Bessemer, Ironwood and Wakefield-Marenisco school districts. Pictured above is Madeline Gabka who perform a wonderful trumpet solo "Carnival of Venice"

The performance was really good, specially when you consider the fact that these students came together for the first time this past Monday. Which only goes to show the talent of Band Director, Steve Boyd. Steve knows how to get the most out his students. In the event you missed it, Steve brought the Red Devil Quiz bowl Team to this year's finals on High School Bowl. Along the way his team also won two regional tournaments.

But, last night belong to the young musicians who did a terriffic job. The program consisted of the following songs:

Russian Sailors Dance Gliere/Balent
Carnival of Venice arr. Jay Wallace .Madeline Gabka, 5th grade trumpet soloist
When the Saints Go Marching In Arr. Feldstein/O'Reilly
Wooly Bully Sam the Sham and the Pharoahs
Camptown Races Foster/Dedrick
The Harmonious Blacksmith Handel/Osterling

As usual enjoyable evenings like this one come to an all to soon finale. We will however, get to see many of these young talented musicians during the fourth of July celebrations. It's great to know that there will be enough young talent to carry on the great band traditions of our all our local school districts. It's also great to know that next fall our local school music programs will all be under talented directorships.

Bravo kids! You too, Steve!
