A Day at the Great Lakes' Renaissance Faire

Ironwood - June 23, 2009

This past weekend was typical of beautiful Northwood's summer days. Perhaps to much to do and too little time in which to do it all. It seems as though our very short summer becomes a constant compromise as to what we can do and what we can't do.

This past weekend was really full of worthwhile events to see. One of Ironwood's great attractions is the annual Great Lakes' Renaissance Faire

What an entertainment bargain the faire is for families and individuals. An entire day of entertainment and fun was had for the affordable price of $5 for adults. Children under the age of 6 entered for free and for those adults who really got into the mood of the era and showed up in period garb entered the faire at a reduced price of $4.

The Great Lakes' Renaissance Faire reborn in 2007, once again returned successfully to Norrie Park in Ironwood, MI. After a temporary hiatus, the mid-evil faire was reborn at a new location with new sponsors, and organizers. Residents of Ironwood and surrounding communities are lucky indeed that the second effort was made and was such a big success.

The faire was the wonderful combination of historical exhibits, demonstrations and fairy tail indulgence.

For those of our readers who were unable to get to this year's "Faire" the IronwoodInfo photos will have to do until next year. Make sure to do yourself a big favor and plan ahead for next year!

Above Deborah, the wife of the "Bladesmith"  is preparing a typical mid-evil dinner consisting of boiled potatoes, small pig, roast chicken and home-made bake bread.   Home-made bread, on an open fire you say?  Yes, a darn good bread at that! At the bottom of the picture above is a home crafted oven, made of fire brick. Yes, it was available in this period. While this may all seem challenging to most of us, Deborah whipped it all together in short order. The most challenging thing is to keep the fire at 400 degrees.

Above the "Lady" is hand-crafting "Buckingham Lace", while a flutist provides soothing music in the background.

Pictured above is Lola. This very cute two year puppy   was at RenFare this weekend. She was in the HOPE exhibit. Lola as a very sweet female mix-breed. (is there any better kind?) Lola wants to find a nice home to live in and in return she will give her new owners lots of love and affection. She certainly seemed very well behaved  at the time of our visit.

If you didn't get to the exhibit stop by at the HOPE Animal Shelter and adopt this very deserving young lady.

As you might expect, there was very good food available at the "Faire". It was prepared and served by volunteers from the "Knights of Columbus" .
