What Were They Thinking ?

Ironwood - July 1, 2009

Pictured above is the demolition of the former Hardee Fast Food Resteraunt on US 2 in Ironwood. It is being torn down to make room for the new O,Reilly's Auto Parts Store.

O'Reilly's is quickly becoming the Walmart of auto parts retailing. The chain consists of 3,337 stores. in 38 states

When this store opens it will be the 4th such store in Ironwood and the 5th in the immediate area. The fifth being Parts Plus recently reopened in Bessemer. This does not take into consideration the fact that Lahti's downtown sells a large volume of auto parts, nor does it take into consideration auto parts sold at the local salvage yards.

Just what was the Planning and Zoning Board thinking when they approved this venture which is very likely to cause a "Locally Owned" business to fail. Why likely? The Parts Plus store at Cloverland and Lake was the fourth parts store at the time it failed. It sstill sits vacant as a testament to the fact that four auto parts stores was one too many. Both NAPA and CarQuest are owned by local businessmen who have invested huge amounts of capital in our community. Only to be sold out by our city government.
Why do the real estate speculators on the P and Z think that a new building is better than an empty building at any cost? Certainly a new business that would contribute to the community would be welcomed, however, one that puts money in the pockets of a Missouri corporation at the expense of local businesses should not be welcomed.

The practice of having real estate speculators on the P and Z is a bad one in our view. Just look at the scandal(s) on Ayer street.
Just look at what has happened to the Pine Tree Art Gallery on US 2. now sitting vacant and deteriorating. Are we really better off with Walgreens than with KFC? Are we better off with Walmart than SuperOne? Doubtful. New for the sake of new is not necessarily best for the community as a whole.

The Hovey debacle started in the P and Z. No need to say anymore!
above - Auto Value store was formally locally owned OK Auto in downtown Ironwood. Perhaps the P and Z thought that one more vacant building downtown will be beneficial to Ironwood.
