Bridgefest Celebrating 50 Years!

HANCOCK-HOUGHTON Bridgefest was organized to celebrate the "birthday" of the Portage Lake Lift Bridge. The lift bridge connects the cities of Hancock and Houghton, and it is a vital link to the Keweenaw Peninsula. The celebration includes many events, including shows, concerts, contests, boat tours, sporting events, and the annual Bridgefest Parade and fireworks display.

The waterfront provides a venue for most activities as well as arts, crafts, and and vendor exhibits. Bridgefest is held in conjunction with the Houghton Rotary Seafood Fest, which provides a variety of delicious foods including live lobster! Friday evening following the parade Marty’s Goldenaires made a concert appearance at Ray Kestner Park (Houghton Beach). The evening closed with fireworks and a Beach Party at the Reamada.
WE LOVE A PARADE!

Although the parade participants were mostly from Houghton County, there were some very talented participants from Gogebic County. Immediately following the Honor Guard was America’s favorite Drum & Bugle Corps. Marty’ Goldenaires directed by Dan Pitrone, led off the Bridgefest Parade.

The parade was quite long, however not quite as large as the Bessemer 4th of July Parade or the UP’s largest parade, the Chassell Strawberry Festival Parade.

Inches aside, this was a ”big, big parade with everything we long for in a Grade “A” Parade. There were Honor Guards, Bands, Floats, Fire Engines, Antique Autos, Quirky Costumes and more. For the marchers this was a long parade to march in on a warm summer afternoon. The parade began at Super 8 Motel in Downtown Houghton and concluded at the “Old Main” at Finlandia University. Finlandia was well represented in the parade and Michigan Tech sent their wonderful Pep Band.

The weather was beautiful, perfect for the event. For those less daring, there was some shade to be found for parade watching.
