The evening concert took place in the Old Pavilion and began with
the presentation of the
colors by the
Honor
Guard, that
was made up of members of the Wakefield
American
Legion and the Wakefield
V.F.W.
The Honor Guard was led by John
"Chummy"
Ozzello
.
Following the
Pledge
of Allegiance the spectators sang the National
Anthem accompanied by the Gogebic Range Concert Band.
The concert
was enjoyed by young and old alike. The 1812 Overture was a real
crowd pleaser. The Veterans Rifle Squad synchronized their Rifle
Fire with the Overture performed by the GRCB.
The Concert Choir was the first to perform.
Under the direction of Judy Levra, the group sang patriotic
songs and led the audience in a sing-a-long. This certainly
quieted the youngsters, who were left scratching their heads and
wondering who recorded those songs?
Songs performed by the Choir included:
Anthems of the Five Branches of Service: Battle Hymn of the
Republic , You are my Sunshine , Let me call you Sweetheart ,
Show me the way to go Home , America the Beautiful
The band, directed by
Larry
Gabka,
performed
several patriotic songs and several popular numbers as well. The
band performed the following songs:
American
Flourish , Star Spangled Spectacular,
The Mansions
of the Lord,
William Tell Overture, Armed Forces Salute , Rough
Riders, Americans We, Hosts of Freedom, The Thunderer, Just a
Closer
Walk with
Thee, Stars and Stripes
Forever,
and God Bless America.
The
GRCB did a really great job performing at the picnic, and they will be
making concert appearances throughout the summer. It need not be
a holiday for you to enjoy this terrific band. Grab a folding
chair and come to Longyear Park for the Band's Summer Concert
