Ironwood Master Gardener, Lynn
Adams has produced a Know Your Weeds Compact Disk titled “The
Big, Bad and Beautiful Weeds, Wildflowers and Invasive Plants of the
Upper Midwest”. Lynn is a certified Advanced Michigan and
Wisconsin Master Gardener and she laughingly says she is a “wanna
be” botanist.“Even as a kid, I loved collecting butterflies, leaves,
flowers, insects, rocks and minerals and making displays and
entering them in the Gogebic County Fair,” she states. And , “I will
never torture a butterfly, moth or insect again!”
She is an avid flower photographer, so when she worked for Iron
County Extension as a horticulture contact and there were not any
good weed books, Lynn decided to make her own presentation.
It took about three years to make this collection of plants, she
would pick the plant, take it home, photograph the plant, categorize
it in its common name, genus, species and if it is native or exotic
, an invasive or an allopathic plant. To make the presentation
credible, a local botanist checked her work.
Her husband Dan, who is also a certified Advanced Michigan and
Wisconsin Master Gardener, detests all weeds and was afraid all
these weeds would be dropping seeds in their yard-Lynn was
careful-nothing has shown up yet. But be careful, she warns, “Many
bad weed seeds are mixed in with mixed bird seed.”
Along with “The Big, Bad and Beautiful Weeds, Wildflowers and
Invasive Plants of the Upper Midwest”, Lynn has developed other
CD’s: “Deer Resistant Plants”, “Beneficial Insects”, and
“Hummingbird, Butterfly and Bee Plants” and has given talks on these
subjects.
Lynn recently spoke at a conference at NMU in Marquette-‘Know Your
Invasive Weeds” and Oh, those Pesky Lawn Weeds”. Her talk was on
identification and how to eradicate the weeds.
“The Big, Bad and Beautiful Weeds, Wildflowers and Invasive
Plants of the Upper Midwest”, is also on sale at Book World in
Ironwood and at Stoffel’s Country Store on U.S 2 in Hurley. |
