Strawberry Festival - page 2

The community of Chassell, located on Pike Bay in the North Western part of the township, is the main concentration of population.

There were tons of strawberries to be eaten at this the 62nd Annual Strawberry Festival. There was no shortage of Brats and Hamburgers either. Long lines of strawberry lovers formed at the pavilion waiting to get the delicious strawberry shortcake being served up by the Lions.

Saturday afternoon the Country Drifters entertained audience at the pavilion. Outside the pavilion were dozens of vendors of every variety, most were Arts and Crafts booths. There were plenty of games and amusements for the kids, not mention the beautiful beach for swimming. Just off the beach there’s a great raft to hang out on.

Free rides in horse drawn wagons were available for visitors, too. Another free ride was available and that was on the Michigan Tech Research Vessel the "Agassiz."
The Chassell parade is claimed to be the largest in the Western U.P. We can’t verify that, but we can attest to the fact that is a very, very large parade. The parade has everything that we want to see in a parade and plenty of it. There lots of fire trucks from several surrounding communities

and there is a large military commitment to the parade as well. This year, the Keweenaw Marine Corps League entered a great float in the parade.

There were plenty of terrific floats and parade entries, including jugglers on unicycles.
There were high school and other bands, no shortage of live music. Once again we were able to enjoy the wonderful Dollar Bay School Band. The little band with a great big sound.
Oh yes there were politicians, lots of them too! But, off setting them was the 18 year old Strawberry Queen Tara Sotirin, and a fleet of automobiles chauffeuring the many Queen Candidates.
