IRONWOOD - Saturday January first would mark
the return of snowmobile oval racing to Gogebic County. This day
more than 100 race drivers from New York to Alaska would gather
at the Gogebic County Fairgrounds to compete in the first
Ironwood Pro Vintage Snowmobile Olympus.
Spectators would watch as 300 sleds would
compete in 37 races plus two Feature Races that would take place over the holiday
weekend. Organizers and fans are looking forward to this race
becoming a large annual event. Next weekend a similar race in
Eagle River will attract more than 700 entrants.
Two
Ironwood residents David Strand and Richard Strand would compete
in this inaugural event.
David entered two snowmobiles a 1980 Polaris
Txl 340 and a 1977 Polaris Tx 340. Richard Stand competed on a
1980 Polaris Txl 340.
