Heather Pearson New Manager of
Student Housing |
|
IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP – June 29, 2011
The Gogebic Community College Board of Trustees received
a favorable May finance report at Tuesday’s board
meeting. For the month the general fund revenues
exceeded expenses and closely tracked the financials of
May 2010. The Balance Sheet indicated that revenues
exceeded expenses by approximately $180,000.
It is expected that there will be no significant
expenses for the Month of June and that there will be a
year end surplus and that will boost the General Fund
Balance for the coming school year.
The snowflakes aquatics who operate the Lindquist Center
swimming Pool donated $15,000 to the college. The
public-private partnership is doing very well.
State of Michigan budget was passed, and as expected it
contained a 4% reduction for higher education. For GCC
that resulted in state aid being reduced from $4,300,000
to $4,144,000.
The GCC Board and Staff customarily author a
conservative budget and had allowed for the expected
revenue reduction in the new budget.
There were 355 students enrolled for the summer
semester. That represented a 22% increase in student
count. Total credit hours were also higher increasing by
28%.
The fall enrollment is down by 40 students. This was
expected as a by-product of a sluggish economy. The
budget had been compiled with an expected drop of
approximately 5%. Applications for student aid are at
what is believed to be an all time high.
Student housing for the fall is on target with 85 units
filled.
A new Manager of Campus Suites Student Housing was hired
at last night’s meeting of the Gogebic Community College
Board of Trustees. Heather Pearson of Corvallis, OR,
will begin her employment on July 18. Pearson holds a
Masters in Student Services Administration from Oregon
State University and a Bachelors in Philosophy and
Political Science from the University of Idaho. She has
experience in student conduct and community standards
administration, cross cultural mentoring, coordination
of orientation programming, and was the president of
Kappa Alpha Theta women’s fraternity.
Following an unsuccessful search process for a Nordic
ski team coach after Will Andresen’s resignation last
spring, Andresen has agreed to return to coach the team
once again. The Board of Trustees approved the
reappointment and he will assume his responsibilities
immediately.
In other action, students in the Automotive Technology
Programs will see a fee increase this upcoming fall.
However, along with the fee increase, students will
receive their toolbox and toolset that is now required
for all students. The college solicited bids for the
toolbox and tools and awarded the bids to Sears of
Ironwood, which was the lowest bidder.
Also, Practical Nursing and Associate Degree Nursing
students will see fee increases for the 2011-2012
academic year. The fees are being implemented to offset
the high level of contact hours for these programs. Both
programs shifted their credit to contact hour last year
to comply with the National League for Nursing
Accrediting Commission, Inc. standards and criteria for
credit limits. |
