In the world of academia the board approved the
appointment of Jill Carver as a fifth grade teacher.
Roni Osier was increased from .85 time to full time
status. Kellie Pitrone was recalled from lay-off status,
to full time status at the Washington School.
The Washington School will have a new Head Teacher this
school year, Diana Hansen. Hanson, the former Title One
teacher will become the Title
One Director. Those positions were formally held by Gene
Goss, who indicated that he would rather return to
classroom and teach. He will return as the fourth grade
teacher.
In other action the School Board approved a tentative
agreement with the Bessemer Educators Association and
approved the Athletic Handbook as presented.
There was a brief discussion that focused on Pay to Play
Athletics. There were concerns of the costs to students
and especially low income students. Administrator Mark
Johnson told the board that an arrangement might be
constructed based on students qualifying for reduced or
free lunch.
The item was sent to committee for further review and
possible development for the 2012-2013 school year.
There are no plans to introduce Pay for Play for the
2011-2012 school year.
