Saturday evening
Heartland Communications Group from Ashland Wisconsin
presented the First Annual Battle of the Bands
Competition at the Pat O’Donnell Civic Center. The event
was titled “King of the Hill”. And after five hours of
Rock B-Side Glitch, an alternative rock group from Bruce
Crossing, Michigan was declared King of the Hill.
The group is normally a quartet, however, Tony
Besson, guitarist was un able to make the event. Playing
as a trio one man shy, the B-Side Glitch was still good
enough to rock the house and take home the first place
prize, $1,500.
When asked what their genre was,
guitarist and vocalist Brian Nowicki said “Gravel”.
Should any of our readers wonder what that sounds like,
listen to the videos below. Performing with Nowicki were
Jake Richardson, vocalist and bass guitarist, and James
Williams, Drummer.
Four other bands competed Saturday: Tripple Koin
from Proctor, Minnesota; Madd Trapper, Ironwood,
Michigan; 1 Above, Ironwood, Michigan; and On Top,
Ironwood, Michigan.
Anchor Baby a group from
Calumet was also to be on the program, but, withdrew on
Saturday.
On Top an Ironwood group was contacted
Saturday morning and agreed to play in that evenings
competition. It was On Top’s first performance as a
group. They have been practicing together for the past
five months. They gave a terrific performance,
especially when considering the short notice that they
were given. Battle of the bands was a fundraising
event with part of the proceeds going to the Polar Bear
Youth Hockey Club and The Ice Crystals Figure Skating
Club.
Thank you
