Citgo
Faces Ironwood Boycott |
 |
Ironwood - September 16, 2008 |
Charlie and Jamie have been hitting the
pavement in Ironwood, protesting the high prices
of gas at the pump. Charlie pointed out that the
Kris brothers own 500 Citgo stations in the U.P.
and northern Wisconsin. Citgo according
Charlie is the first to raise the price of
gasoline and the last to lower.
Unsubstantiated rumors around town speculate as
to other unfriendly business practices.
There is a nation wide boycott against Citgo,
the Venezuelan owned petroleum company. The
Venezuelan government is attempting to
nationalize petroleum operations of several
international oil companies operating within its
alleged borders.
Last year before the run up of gasoline
prices Citgo announce that it would close 10,000
service stations in the U.S. With current
price levels we guess that they changed their
minds.
Charlie wants to know why Citgo prices at the
pump are at or near record levels when the cost
of a barrel of crude is down more than 40%..
So do we Charlie, so do we. |

Contract
Story More Hype than Reality |
 |
The Monday morning front page of an Ironwood
Tabloid read "Deal or No Deal" referring to the
on again off again contract negotiations between
the Ironwood School District and the Teachers
Union. Of course the eye catching headline
would lead readers into thinking that the
possibility of a contract deal could have been
reached during Monday night's closed session.
However, deeper into the article it was evident
from the interview with board member Steve
Thomas, it was clear that that no deal had been
struck between the parties and the headline was
just hyperbole plain and simple. |
 |

the reality of the contract particulars unfold
as Brian Anderson separates the facts from the
hyperbole. |
At the onset of the Monday Ironwood School
Board meeting, trustee, Brian Anderson, told the
visitors attending the meeting that they need
not wait through to the conclusion of the closed
session if they were expecting action on a
contract with the union. In other words there
was no offer in front of the board. According
to Anderson, what the Union had presented to the
negotiating committee was not an agreement, but
only a proposal. Anderson stated that the
proposal was totally unacceptable to the board.
In the opinion of the editorial staff
IronwoodInfo, it is highly unlikely that the
School Board will ratify a contract with the
union. The School District is on the edge of
going into deficit. Any decent agreement with
the teachers will most likely push the district
over the edge.
It is also likely, that board would
prefer to stall an agreement until after the
consolidation vote.

Skate Boarding Taboo at Ironwood Schools |
Skate Boarding Not Welcomed On School Grounds
IRONWOOD - September 15, 2008
At tonight's regularly scheduled meeting of the
Ironwood School Board, two items discussed
evolved around skating boarding. First, Bob
Tervonen of 620 North Lowell Street complained
about skate boarding abuses at Sleight School.
He reported that during no school hours that
gangs of skate boarders descended upon the
school grounds and used the monkey bars as
skateboard aparatus. He complained about
profanity and general loud noises into the early
morning hours, sometimes until 3:00 am or later.
He (Bob) has chased the kids away himself or
called Public Safety.
His sentiments were echoed by school board
trustee Brian Anderson of 214 West Norrie
street, who stated that he has witnessed the
same abusive behavior.
As a result of their testimony a curfew will be
set at the school.
The second item brought before the board was
skateboarding at the high school. Mr Rayner, the
superintendent, discussed skateboarding during
school events. He thought it was dangerous to
both pedestrians and skateboarders alike. As a
result of the discussion, skateboarding is now
banned outright.
In other discussion, Mrs. Erickson, the town
librarian stated that the board has failed to
set priorities. It was her belief that books
needed to made a priority at the district and
that she felt this needed correction.
Ironic that Mrs. Erickson was at this meeting
when skateboarding was discussed. Her Husband,
the city manager, promised a skateboard park for
the kids this summer. It was due to his
mismanagement of the grant application that the
park did not materialize and kids looked for
alternatives to the park promised, but not
delivered.. |

The Low-Income Housing project proposed
