GCC Staff Host "Welcome Picnic"

Wednesday was a perfect summer day and one suited for a summer picnic. Fortunately, the administration and staff had planned just such an event for yesterday when they hosted a "Welcome Picnic" for the new and returning students. The patio area of the GCC facility made perfect location for the event. Students scattered about the lawn gave the impression that one was at a Sunday picnic at the park. The lightly inhabited patio area became a bee hive of activity when the clock struck 11:30. In what seemed like an instant the space was filled with hungry students and staff members.
I sat quietly out of the way at a rare empty table when I was approached by four young students seeking a seat. I was surprised to find out that of the four, only one was a Michigan resident. Jenelle, pictured above on the left lives in Tri-Mountain. After telling her of my unforgettable car crash in Tri Mountain, I introduced my self to Rhonda, who is a Nursing Program student who resides in Manitowish Waters. To her right, was Carolyn from Saxon and John from Waukesha, WI. John, Carolyn and Jenelle are all enrolled in our Cosmetology Program. I inquired of John if the new dorms were still new. He confirmed that they were well maintained and still new.
With that I continued to roam the area taking photos of the endless line of students still streaming into the patio area. There were several tables set up next to the food line where students were given handouts by vendors. Wells Fargo was on hand encouraging students to open bank accounts at their facility. It was refreshing to see that savings accounts had replaced credit cards as an incentive to lure students .
Cookies seem to be the perennial crowd pleaser. Just in case a granola cruncher  sneaks in the line Don and Erik had their bases  covered with hamburger  look a likes.
above Don Pelkola and Erik Guenard cooked up a feast of Brats, Real Burgers and Veggie Burgers.  They did a great job helping to feed a large swarm of hungry students. Don reminded me that next month GCC will again host the regional H.S. Quiz Bowl Tournament. Gogebic "Community" College. G.C.C.  is with out a doubt the major cornerstone of our community.
