Ironwood - September 23, 2009 The I.A.S.D.
school board hear from Karen Kangas-Tizziani
Monday evening in regard to a proposed quarter
of a million dollar grant that would be used to
update the school library. It was learned that
the publications at L.L.W. library have not been
updated since the mid seventies.
The grant requires that for the period of the
grant, that the district hire a "Qualified"
librarian. Board chairman Steve Thomas asked if
kids were taking books out of the library and if
it were worth the cost of hiring a
librarian. After learning that the grant
would found the cost of a librarian, Thomas
relented and supported the grant application.
Mr. Thomas had a valid point, however, it's
the same old chicken and egg dilemma. Do kids
not use the school library because the books are
out-of-date. Do you fund the project if the kids
are just not interested?
Mrs. Elaine Erickson, the Carnegie Librarian
asked to speak on the subject, but Thomas would
not permit her do do so.
Thomas also took aim at a Daily Globe report
that suggested that the district audit would
show a $325,000 Fund Balance. He complained that
the Globe article quoted him as saying that the
information came from the Business Office. He
told the board that his reply to the Globe
question was "I Don't Know!" |
