Members of the Bessemer City
Council said goodbye to councilmen
Carpenedo and Peterson at the close
of last nights council meeting. Both
councilmen have chosen not to seek
reelection in today’s elections.
Mayor John Frillo presented the the
two councilmen with plaques of
appreciation by the city for their
service to the community.
The council tabled a vote of a
variance request by Mr Harju. Harju
wants to get a use variance for a
snowmobile park on his forty plus
acreage. In the past Harju has
operated the park on a very limited
basis. His request for a permanent
variance brought swift action by
neighbors who do not want the park
so close to their homes, citing
noise and traffic in their petition
presented to the council.
A neighbor, Greg Miller was at
the meeting. He told the council
that the neighbors were not
necessarily opposed to the park
being operated as it had been in the
past. Their concern was with a
permanent variance and what might
develop from it.
The council voted to postpone
action pending a public hearing.
The council took action on the
U.S. 2 traffic situation. Members of
the council are not satisfied with
the signage along the highway. The
number one culprit is the Tacconelli
Sign which obscures the 30mph sign
from eastbound motorist . Councilmen
Matonich believes that signs could
and should be better placed along
the roadway.
The only disagreement on the
matter results from the impotency of
MDOT officials to do anything about
the matter. They cite the fact that
in order to move a sign just one
inch an entire traffic survey must
be completed by the State Police.
The irony in this is that the the
survey could actually result in the
speed limit being increased. It was
the probability of that happening
that caused the signage request to
be voted down at last night’s
meeting.
Editor’s Note: There is something
very wrong with this entire
situation. One minute we’re told
that there are no longer enough
State Police Officers to inspect our
school buses. The next minute we’re
told MDOT cannot make a highway
signage decision without the State
Police stopping their vital work in
order to do a traffic survey. We’re
told by MDOT that there isn’t enough
dead bodies on US 2 to justify a
traffic light at the Walmart
intersection. Not enough money or
injuries to justify the expense of
one stinking traffic light and yet
the same cast of characters can give
away million dollar communication
towers so that they build new
multi-million dollar towers. That’s
a great big HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!
Township Trustees Rebuff Simmons
Ironwood Township - October 30, 2009
The Township Board of Trustees confirmed
their confidence in Township Supervisor Kim
Mattson. In a unanimous vote the Trustees
elected Mattson to represent the
Trustees on a joint conference committee
with members of the Planning and Zoning
Committee. The committee was formed to
finalize the INFAMOUS SOIL ORDINANCE.
Jim Simmons is spending money as if it
were water in his sexist vendetta against
Kim Mattson.
Unfortuately, Simmons is spending
Township money in the process. Township
Taxpayers will pick up the tab for the
special election created by Simmons and his
band of semi-illiterate followers.
We now know why the Globe was so willing
to print his smear letters. He has placed a
full page in the Globe. It appears that
Advertising revenue drives the Globe
editorial and Opinion page. Sounds just like
the Unfriendly Friend$ of the Carnegie
doesn't it?
Meantime Mattson has sent out fliers of
her own:
Vote "No" To The Recall on
November 3
On November 3, each voter in Ironwood
Township will be faced with six ballot
questions. The third question on the ballot
is:
Shall Kim M. Mattson be
recalled from the office of Ironwood
Township Supervisor?
Please vote No.
I have been with the Ironwood Township
since July, 2000. Before working at the
Township, I worked at MFC First National
Bank for eight years. Previous to that,
while attending college, I worked at
Sun-N-Snow Café. I obtained my Associates
Degree from G.C.C. and my Bachelors Degree
in Business-Accounting from the University
of Phoenix. I am also a Level 1 Assessor.
Being elected to the position of
Supervisor in 2008 was an honor. I take the
office seriously, listening to concerns and
helping with problems.
I was born and raised in the Township, on
Slade Road. I continue the tradition by
raising my children, Troy and Jamee, in the
Township too. My Father, Kenneth (Bim) was a
local mechanic and my Mother, Nancy worked
in banking and real estate. I have many
local ties here and aim to live up to their
aspirations.
I am a member of the GRWA (Gogebic Range
Water Authority) Board, the GRWA Executive
Board, the GIWA (Gogebic Iron Wastewater
Authority) Board, the PAUD (Powderhorn Area
Utility District) Board, Parks and
Recreation Committee, the Strengthening Your
Niche group, the Ironwood PTO, and am
President of the Barracuda Swim Team Parents
Board.
In order for the recall to have made it
to the ballot, a petition was circulated.
While it was circulating, many people were
given misinformation about me. Again, I was
born and raised here. Having my reputation
tarnished by this misinformation has been
very difficult. The misinformation on the
petition pertains to wages, meetings,
petitions, and pensions.
The following is clarification on the
misinformation:
The Charter Township of Ironwood
Board of Trustees consists of seven
members-each of whom have equal votes. I
was not seated in office when the first
draft budget was presented. The
seven-member board makes the decisions
on the proposed budget. As Supervisor, I
received a 0% increase from my
predecessor. The Clerk and Treasurer
received a 3% increase.
Meeting notices are posted as
required by the Open Meetings Act, and
are a statutory duty of the Clerk.
Union negotiation contracts are not
discussed in open meetings until the
contracts are approved.
Management was contacted to see if
they were aware of a petition
circulating there.
Timely responses are given to all
Freedom of Information Act requests
according to Michigan law. Requests are
answered exactly as received.
Thank you to all for your continued
support. Please contact me if you have any
questions.

Ironwood, MI 49938
Rick Semo:
"Not Until It's Ours!"
Recently on one of Semo's tours of the
Caves the group came across junk left there
by some poor mannered people. One of the
tourists asked "shouldn't we pick this up?"
Semo replied "Not until this place is ours!"
Ooops, I thought it belongs to the
taxpayers and all the residents. We guess
the perpetrator of the littering wasn't the
only one with bad manners!
This story was told to us by
several people on that tour. Mr. Semo has
shown such characteristics before. During
the election for the K-6 Bond Issue, Mr.
Semo stopped Arlene Szott who was on her way
into the Gymnorium to speak on a different
point of view than that of Semo's. He made
sure that he was so rude that Arlene was
shaken up and unable to address the voters
in the gym. Semo, later called to apologize
for his obnoxious behavior.
Semo has made it very clear that he wants
no motorized vehicles in the Caves. So has
Gemma Lamb, Bob Burchell and Ron Taylor. The
problem we have with this is that the
Proposed Miners Memorial Park is a sham. A
coverup to hide the real motives of these
hiker/biker groups. That is to 1) kick the
ATV and Snowmobiles out of the Caves and 2)
to kick the Snowmobiles and ATV's off of
Trail 2 and, 3) Kick the ATVs and
Snowmobiles off the City Streets.
This is what the MMP wants. That is what
they consider their "Comprehensive
Recreational Vehicle Master Plan"
We believe that the Caves area is large
enough to accommodate both motorized
and non-motorized sports.
We believe that Ironwood cannot afford to
choose one or the other.
We believe that a Miner's Memorial Park
is an OK idea. But, we believe that it
should be developed by honest people with
honest motives.
I do not ride ATVs nor do I Ride
snowmobiles. I have in the last two months
invested in a new mountain bike and a new
set of snow shoes. I look forward to using
them in the caves area.
But, I do not look forward to evicting
snowmobiles or atv's for my own Greedy
purposes. Ironwood cannot afford to choose
one or the other.
Unfortunately, some of the people
involved in the division have monetary
considerations that are clouding their
judgment.

Ironwood Issue
Ironwood - November
2, 2009
It seems as might be expected at
Election time, things start getting
muddy as to who said what and who
did what. Politicians are known to
have selective memory and of course
those with a financial stake in the
election outcome also have selective
memories.
There are those who would lead
you to believe that the Caves is not
an issue in this election. Well it
is an issue. It is an issue that goes straight to the
character of the candidates. Some
candidate such as Burchell and Gemma
Lamb, Semo and Taylor are into this
issue right up their eyeballs.
Taylor and Semo are outspoken
opponents of ATV’s and Snowmobiles.
Taylor at a public hearing stated
that he moved to Ironwood because it
didn’t allow snowmobiles on the
streets. His partners in crime say
they want a Comprehensive Plan for
Recreational Vehicles. They, Lamb
and Burchell have voted against
allowing snowmobiles on selective
streets. They also voted against
having Trail number 2. They don’t
want ATV’s or Snowmobiles in the
caves.
Which begs the question. Just
where the heck do they want these
motorized recreational vehicles?
Obviously anywhere except Ironwood.
What bothers me most is that Semo,
Burchell, Lamb and Taylor all lack
the courage of their convictions and
will not state honestly just what
their position is on the Caves.

Both candidates have extreme anti snowmobile
and ATV sentiments
Have you ever seen the movie
"Best Little Whorehouse in Texas"?
In it there’s a scene where
reporters are asking the Governor,
played by Charles Durning, about the
whorehouse. In reply, the Governor
goes into a song and dance routine
called "The Side Step" dancing and
singing all over the steps to the
capital building. He never uttered
one syllable that remotely resembled
an answer.
Listening to Burchell, Lamb, Semo
and Taylor, I get the feeling that I
am watching the Governor on rerun.
Over and over and over ad nauseum.
You too can view the video by
clicking below.
See the Side Step.
Click above. If you've attended any
city council meetings in the last
four years you will really
appreciate this one!
The Miner’s Memorial Heritage
Park concept was adapted long after
it was decided to kick motorized
sports out of the Caves. There was
no MMHP until the trail plan
stumbled when the trail advocates
used their positions on the P&Z and
Trail Committee to block Jerry
Pisani from building warehouses on
the corner of Ayer and Bonnie. They
claimed they needed the 4+ acres for
their trail to pass through. HMMMM!
After public opinion opposed the
loss of the tax revenue, Burchell,
Semo and Lamb set out in a new
direction. Let’s call the trails
something people will be afraid to
talk out against. Oh, let’s call it
a heritage trail. Well it has worked
to some extent, but not entirely.
Trail interest has waned. Recent
tours of the caves have produced
less than half the number of hikers
as earlier in the year. Even a tour
to the Pabst Mine on the anniversary
of the Mine Disaster was a dismal
failure. If local residents don’t
care why would anyone else care.
This alleged memorial has already
cost the Ironwood taxpayers and will
cost them a great deal more if the
wrong people are elected to the city
council.

HOVEY - A LOT
TO CHEW ON!
Hovey, now there’s a hot topic.
First some background. While some
people sat around whining about the
Hovey project, IronwoodInfo
reporters Arvo Toolanen and Lou
Bonagura started the anti-Hovey ball
rolling. They (we) wrote more than
200 letters to government officials
in Lansing. We wrote every state
representative and state senator in
Lansing. Wow, was that a learning
experience. We even wrote to the
State Police and State Board of
Education, explaining how Hovey was
jeopardizing their funding.
We hit pay dirt on the second
mailing when we pointed out how
MSHDA had been greasing the skids
for the downstate speculators. We
pointed to all the surveys showing
the foul land, we pointed out how a
DEQ survey on wet lands issues had
been waived etc., etc. etc. We
didn’t sit on our hands nor did we
just write letters, or editorials.
We at IronwoodInfo put our money
where our mouths were.
We paid for information obtained
through the Freedom of Information
Act. Much of that information is now
in the hands of the attorneys
fighting the Hovey debacle.
What we did accomplish was this, we
at IronwoodInfo stalled the project
long enough for others to jump into
the fray. Today, 95% of taxpayers
and of those who can read disapprove
of the Hovey project. Now, some of
the city council supporters have
become Born Again, with respect to
the project.
With the project stalled and
public opinion rising against the
project, we were able to do one more
thing. The city council finally
listened to one of our major
complaints about Hovey. There was no
sunset clause to the tax free ride.
No termination date. The wording
accepted by the city council would
have left the possibility of this
debacle being tax free forever. Now,
everyone knows and understands what
we knew and reported all along.
Let’s be clear about this, Tom
Laabs never voted to approve the
Hovey Project. In fact, he was the
person who called for placing the
issue on next Tuesday’s Ballot for
the voters to decide.
It was Gemma Lamb who voted
against putting it on the ballot .
Tom Laabs, never supported Hovey
outright. He did favor the project
if the revenues to the city
were increased. Tom has been lusting
over the $38,000 per year water
charges that the complex is
predicted to produce. Look again
Tom. There’s hanky panky there also.
The commission candidates should all
walk away from Hovey. Not because of
politics but because the project is
bad for Ironwood. Interesting
enough, the land where the project
was to be built was ordered to be
sold. Nothing has been done on that
score either. Nothing. It is the
same group of Unfriendly’$ behind
that too!
PROPOSED HOVEY TENNIS COURTS
Burchell had a chance to stop
Hovey when he was a member of the
Planning and Zoning board. He
didn’t. In fact, he is the person
responsible for adding Tennis Courts
to a DNR grant request. The courts
in his grant request were to be
built on HOVEY PROPERTY with our
money!
Once again IronwoodInfo moved to
protect the city taxpayers. Our
conversation with the DNR raised
their attention to the fact that the
property on which the $200,000
tennis courts would be built would
belong to a private investor.
THE CIVIC
CENTER
The Civic Center. This is a
non-issue raised by some people to
divert attention away from the caves
and other pertinent issues. The
civic center millage was approved by
the voters 3-1 last year. As a
result of this action the Civic
Center could pay it’s bills and
become fiscally sound.
Candidates George Georig and Tom
Laabs are both on the Civic Center
Board and have made the changes
necessary to put the center back in
the black.
While we’re on the subject, King
Noren, Burchell and Gemma Lamb did
everything in their power to kill
off the center and keep the millage
from getting on the ballot. Gemma
Lamb voted twice against keeping the
center open for the Polar Bears and
Ice Crystals.
It was Tom Laabs and Suzanne Toth
who stood fast against the
conspiriters and placed the matter
on the ballot, thus insuring a home
for the Ice Crystals, Polar Bears
and other kids to skate during the
long, long winters.
If and/or when a
Library Tax is imposed on the
Ironwood Citizens it will be because
of the skullduggery of
Burchell, Noren and Lamb pictured
above.
LIBRARY
FRIENDS NOT SO FRIENDLY
The Number One Issue this year
should be The Tax and Spend Library
Renovation. Paying taxes on a
Library renovation already voted
down by the taxpayers by more than a
2-1 margin is an extremely important
matter. It goes directly to the
integrity of the not so friendly
friend$ of the library.
Two years
ago the City Manager, husband of the
Librarian, placed the library
renovation into the City Improvement
Plan without anyone’s permission.
But, you can bet he had the approval
of "I Wish I Was King Bruce Noren."
Fortunately, City Council Member
John Kasieta caught the trickery and
exposed it at a council meeting.
Once more we learned a lot about the
issue by using the Freedom of
Information Act. Some of the
information was so damning we didn’t
pursue all of it. We did however,
expose most of what we learned to
the public which resulted in the
landslide defeat of the Tax.
Again, the City manager has
attempted to move the Unfriendly
Taxation measure through the city
council. Fortunately, Congressman
Stupak let the cat out of the bag
with his press release. Now we can
deal directly with those culpable,
Gemma Lamb and Bob Burchell. They
may be friendly to the library and
Hovey but they certainly are not
friendly to taxpayers. Too much of
their time is being spent on
self-serving projects and screw
everyone else. How Unfriendly!
Ironwood to Borrow and Tax $1,550,000
Unfriendly Friend$
at it Again
above right- Candidate Bob Burchell and
above left fellow unfriendly friend Bruce
Noren. On bottom right candidate Gemma Lamb the most
unfriendly friend of all. All three
attempted to evict the little Ice Crystals
and Polar Bears from the Civic Center. All
three supported Hovey Scam. In fact Burchell
who now claims to be against Hovey (just in
time for the election) originally approved
Hovey when he was on the Planning
Commission. Burchell and Lamb are now running
for re-election on an anti snowmobile and
anti-ATV platform. Both have cast negative
votes against motor sports and voted to eliminate
snowmobiles and atv's from Ironwood.
Other unfriendly candidates in this year's
election are: Rick Semo and Ron Taylor. Both
Semo and Taylor make it perfectly clear that
they are opponents of ATVs and Snowmobiles
period! What a great attitude for Ironwood's
economy.
Isn't it amazing? A city that can't find the
funds to repair the aged water system can
borrow millions to renovate a dilapidated
library.
And isn't even more amazing that
less than two years ago the taxpayers of
Ironwood, by a vote of more than 2-1 said no
to borrowing millions for the same folly.
This latest action by the Unfriendly Friend$ smells
just like that of the Hovey scam! More
to follow, perhaps much more.

STUPAK ANNOUNCES $1.6
MILLION
IN STIMULUS FUNDS FOR
IRONWOOD
WASHINGTON,
DC –
U.S. Congressman Bart Stupak
(D-Menominee) announced the
city of
Ironwood
has received a $50,000 grant
and a loan for $1,550,000 to
renovate and expand the
historical Ironwood Carnegie
Library.
The U.S. Department of
Agriculture is providing the
funding through the American
Recovery and Reinvestment
Act of 2009 (ARRA).This stimulus funding
is designated for community
facility projects.
“The Carnegie Library is a
landmark in Ironwood and
this funding will provide
upgrades to make the
facility safer and more
accessible to better serve
the community,” Stupak said.“I applaud this
significant investment of
stimulus funds in Ironwood.Support from the USDA
is critical to maintaining
and improving essential
community facilities in
rural areas across
Northern Michigan.”
The stimulus funding will be
used to expand access to the
library for handicapped and
disabled customers; create
program, activity, meeting
and office spaces; upgrade
heating, ventilation and air
conditioning systems; and
install new windows to
improve productivity and
efficiency.At present, none of
the local public schools
have libraries in their
buildings, so maintaining
and upgrading this public
facility is especially
important for the community
of Ironwood and the
surrounding areas.
To date,
Gogebic
County
has received $38,247,739 in
ARRA funds, the second
highest total in the First
Congressional District.
The USDA Rural Development
Community Facilities program
helps finance essential
community facilities for
public use in rural areas. These facilities
include hospitals, health
care and assisted-living
facilities, child care
center, fire and rescue
stations, police stations,
community centers, public
buildings and
transportation.Funds are available
to public bodies, non-profit
organizations and federally
recognized Indian tribes.
Did anyone bother to
inform the Congressman that the
Taxpayers have already said no to
this boondoggle ?
Who Said
What
above
Bergman explaining why he and his group
boycotted the meetings.
There is no doubt that the
supporters of motorized sports are being
more open about the issue of sharing the
trail system, all 500+ acres of it.
Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about
some of the non-motorized sports people. The
group has been taken over by radicals and
more level headed people have been driven
from their ranks.
The two groups came
close to working out their differences until
representatives of the non-motorized sports
advocates returned to their group's regular
meeting. At that time the loud radicals
shouted down the more level minded members
and came up with an "ALL OR NOTHING" game
plan.
Since then the group including Burchell,
Lamb, Taylor and Semo have avoided answering
any questions posed to them about their
motives.
It is quite simple, answer these two
questions individually, without doing the
sidestep:
Do you believe that both groups can share
the caves area - Yes or No?
Explain?
Yes is just a three letter word, no just
two letters, simple enough for any of the
candidates to handle. It doesn't require an
above average IQ to handle.
"We Didn't
Break Off the Talks" (Oh Really?)
That's what Tom Bergman told
the City Council, referring to his group's
boycott of the Caves Negotiation Meetings.
Oh well, here's the Letter He sent to the
city prior to the meeting. See what you
think.
DATE: Tuesday, August 4,2009
TO: Scott Erickson, lronwood City Manager
Dan Petersen, Community Dev. Director
Scott and Dan,
The Friends of the Miners Memorial Heritage
Park (FMMHP) held its monthly general
membership meeting on Tuesday, July 28,
2009. At this meeting, we discussed the
compromises proposed at the meeting the City
held on July 8, 2009.
Jackie Powers, Tom Bergman, and Sam Davey
attended the July 8th meeting as
representatives of the FMMHP, along with
eight motorized recreationalists.
Many members of the Friends of Miners
Memorial Heritage Park have attended all
three of the "discussions about use of the
caves" with the City. The FMMHP position
follows.
We, the Friends of the Miners Memorial
Heritage Park, still believe a
non-motorized park would be best for our
community:
A. to make the area most accessible and safe
to ALL people in the community,
B. from an economic and neighborhood
revitalization perspective, & most
importantly,
C. to best honor and celebrate our mining
heritage and the thousands of miners who
worked this land
We understand how sensitive and complicated
an issue this is and appreciate inclusion in
the process. However, before meeting yet
again with the City and other groups
regarding shared usage of said land, the
Friends of the Miners Memorial Park request
that the City and its Commission first:
1. Complete land title searches so the City
and the general public know the property
ownership of all of the land in question,
per the Resolution passed in February;
2. Confirm what the best use is of the land
in question, in accordance with proper
planning procedures and the City's Master
Plan.
3. Adopt a comprehensive policy for
motorized recreational vehicle usage in the
City of lronwood (including ATVs, dirt
bikes, snowmobiles, etc.) including an
enforcement plan.
Sincerely,
Tom Bergman, Vice-President
Friends of the Miners Memorial Heritage
Park, lnc.
Editor:
First, it is very
clear that the group did boycott the
meeting. It is equally clear that they do
not want motorized sports in the caves. They
say just that in this letter.
Second, they were using the title search
thing as means to reduce the apparent size
of the Caves and park area. Thereby,
creating the illusion that the 500+acres
were and are too small to share.
Hog wash! New York's Central Park is just
800 acres and each year over 23 million
people share the park, including; bikers,
hikers and crazy cab drivers!
Tatlor above told committee that he moved to
Ironwood to avoid Snowmobiles!
It is quite evident that Mr.
Bergman's group has been taken over by
radicals who wanted to stall the caves
takeover until after the election. They hope
to elect the anti-motorized sports
candidates, Lamb, Burchell, Semo and Taylor
(pictured left).
What started out as a
group of recreationalists is now not much
more than that of a Political Action
Committee.
Proof again that the nicest people can
support bad ideas.
This is nothing new for
Burchell and Lamb who have a history of bad
decisions on the City Council, including
evicting the little kids who ice skate at
the civic center. Stalling the Hovey
process. Gema Lamb voted against allowing
the voters to decide the issue. Their
friends and comrades, the Unfriendly Friend$
of the Library, promoted a bond issue to
renovate the library and have sneaked the
item by us once again. (We will be reporting
on the library scam in detail.)
They are
the very reason that there isn't a
comprehensive recreational plan in place
right now!
If you thought Ironwood's economy had
already hit bottom just wait!
Signs, Signs, Everywhere There's Signs!
Ironwood - October 29, 2009
I'm old enough to remember the
song Signs - Signs and nearly every election
time that song comes to mind. It's hard to
ignore with all those political signs
staring us in the face, wherever we go. What
is surprising that there are still
candidates whose signs fail to meet the
requirements of the Michigan and local
election laws.
Pictured above are the recall signs
polluting the Ironwood Township right a
ways. These signs are illegal and they are
illegally placed along the county roads. A
representative from the Road Commission
advises that all these signs are on the
county right a way and that's illegal. The
signs also fail to provide the proper
contact information required on the election
signs. This is a violation of Michigan
Election Laws and we are processing a
complaint against the Three Stooges who are
blighting our communities. Yes, our
communities. Jim Simmons evidently doesn't
know where the Township ends. His signs have
also been placed along the City of
Ironwood's right a ways. No surprise, he
doesn't know very much about government,
especially his own.
Speaking of missing contact information.
The Burchell sign above also lacks contact
information. Of course you only need to call
the Unfriendly Friend$$$ of the Library for
further misinformation and if you do, ask
them how they expect Ironwood Taxpayers
should pay for their $2,000,000 library
renovation. Actually Bob Burchell could tell
you as he's one of the organizers for the
boondoggle! Hmmmm.
If you have a child
that plays Polar Bear Hockey or in the "Ice
Crystal" ask Bob where the kids will skate
when he and his Unfriendly Friend$$ of the
Library close the civic center.
A Matter
of Clarity
As reported here in IronwoodInfo, James
Simmons a township resident, has managed to
place a recall petition on the November
Ballot. Ever since he lost his bid for a
seat on the Board of Trustees, Simmons has
been attempting to harass and disrupt the
township meetings. His frustration has
culminated in an effort to recall Kim
Mattson, the Township Supervisor.
Pictured above Kim Mattson at
the clarity meeting seated with her
supporters - pictured below Simmons and his
supporters
In June, as a matter of procedure there
was a clarity meeting held in the Gogebic
County Courthouse. The meeting consisted of
the three members of the committee charged
with approving or not approving, Simmons
petition.
The committee consisted of Judge Joel
Massie, County Clerk Jerry Pelissero and
County Treasurer Sue Pertile. Before, during
and after the meeting Judge Massie and the
County Clerk stated that the purpose of the
meeting was to judge only the clarity of the
petition statement, not to validate the
intent of the petition.
They told the parties at the hearing that
they could only rule that Simmons’ was clear
to the point that it was clear and could be
understood by a voter. The ruling to place
the item on the ballot did not validate the
integrity of Simmons’ assertions. Judge
Massie pointed out that the charges could be
a total fabrication, and if the statement
was clear and understandable then committee
was required to place the item on the
ballot.
The fact that Simmons has managed to find
enough malcontents to sign his petition and
has managed to word it craftily does not
make the charges truthful. It’s impossible
to turn a lie into anything other than a
lie.
A half truth is not the truth it’s a lie.
Simmons may be crafty but fortunately he’s
not intelligent, nor is the small group of
extremists that he surrounds himself with.
How intelligent can they be when they must
resort to physical violence when things are
not going their way.
On the November Ballot you will be
reading the lies that Simmons’ has used to
harass and otherwise embarrass Kim Mattson.
But fortunately, you will also be reading
Mattson’s response to the Simmons lies.
We are reproducing the Simmons mis-statement
as it will appear on the ballot and
Mattson’s repines to each of the
misrepresentations.
Simmon’s Lie Number One
During Mattson's first few days in
office, she was responsible for a "proposed"
draft budget which would have increased her
salary by 15% over her predecessor and a
17.5% increase for the Treasurer and Clerk.
These wages could have taken effect if not
for public outrage.
Mattson’s Rebuttal to Lie Number One
I was not seated in office when the first
draft budget was presented. Each department
submits their budget to the Supervisor to
present. The seven-member board makes the
decisions on the proposed budget. As
Supervisor, I received a 0% increase from my
predecessor. The Clerk and Treasurer
received a 3% increase.
Simmons Lie Number Two
Failed to adequately notify the media of
special meeting times and dates, including
sending false information about the start
time on a special meeting held on February
18, 2009.
Mattson’s Rebuttal to Lie Number Two
Notification of meetings is the Clerk's
statutory duty. Notices are posted as
required by the Open Meetings Act.
Simmons Lie Number Three
Tried to keep information from the public
at a meeting on April 13, 2009. Mattson had
agenda items listed as "items 1,2, & 3."
Called for a vote without publicly
discussing the content of those items
relating to union pay and benefits. Would
not disclose the contents until forced under
the Freedom of Information Act days later.
Mattson’s Rebuttal to Lie Number Three
The union negotiation committee presented
items 1, 2, & 3 for board approval and the
Board approved them. Once approved, the
Freedom of Information request was answered
in accordance
with the law.
Simmons Lie Number Four
Abused her elected position by using the
"power of office" to make false allegations
against taxpaying citizens, including
calling an employer and causing disruptions
in the citizen's respective work
environment.
Mattson’s Rebuttal to Lie Number Four
A petition was circulating at a large
local employer. The CEO was contacted
regarding the petition.
Simmons Lie Number Five
Stated there was a pension contract
requiring the township to pay 10% of gross
compensation to the full-time officials and
employees. A Freedom of Information Act
request uncovered no such contract.
Mattson’s Rebuttal to Lie Number Five
Timely responses are given to all Freedom
of Information Act requests according to
Michigan law. Requests are answered exactly
as received.
While Simmons may appear to be a fool, he
is not. He is shrewd, cunning and very mean
spirited. The charges he placed on the
ballot were cleverly prepared so as to trap
voters by using their own natural fears to
bait their own trap.
He starts off with Mattson’s "salary" as
his first statement. Today, when everyone is
concerned with taxes and a poor economy he
knew that addressing Mattson’s salary he
would instantly garner concern and support
from unkowledgable voters.
He depended on the ignorance of voters,
such as himself, in that they would be
totally unaware of the budget process.
As someone who regularly attends township
meetings, I know that Mattson had no part in
preparing the budget Simmons eludes to. The
First draft was prepared by the outgoing
board, not the current board.
Simmons states in number two that the
media and public were not informed as to the
dates and times of the meetings.
The Supervisor (Mattson) is not
responsible for posting the dates and times
of the meetings. It is the responsibility of
the Township Clerk. The problem, was that
Simmons himself was unaware of the meeting
times. After all, prior to losing the
election he didn’t attend township meetings
and he was totally ignorant as to
procedures. If the meetings had not been
properly posted why was everyone else at the
meeting except him.
Simmons refers to the Freedom of
Information Act in two of the five items he
has placed on the ballot. Simmons accuses
Mattson of having to be forced into giving
him information. I have seen Kim Mattson on
several occasions offer to give Simmons the
information he has asked for after the
meeting. Unfortunately, Simmons would use
the time after the meetings to suck up to
the Globe reporters. Like Simmons, the Globe
Reporters were absent from the township
meetings for many years. They show up
regularly now sensing that there is muck to
rake.
Item number four is fairly ambiguous and
was the one item that almost failed the
clarity review. He uses terminology such as
"power of her office" to scam the voter.
Whatever it is that he is trying to say in
number four will never be understood by
anyone but him. If that’s the best he could
do shame on him.
