IEDC
Considers Consortium |
 |
Ironwood - October 28, 2009 The
Ironwood Economic Development Corporation
met today to discuss the potential future
revolving loan fund draft for the interlocal
agreement and draft reuse plan.
The first order of business on the agenda
was Debbie Bowles resignation. The
Commission accepted the resignation with
regrets.
The MEDC is looking to consolidate the 6
regional counties and two cities into one
EDC district. While the MEDC sites
De-Federalization as one of the reasons for
the consolidation effort, it has not been
willing to participate in the plan other
than being the Fiduciary for the funds. The
plan is still sketchy with several questions
yet to be answered. While there has talk
that the local funds would be merged into
one fund, it has not been decided how long
the funds would remain under the control of
the local governments.
There will be six counties and two cities
in the western U.P. under the merger plan.
The counties include Gogebic, Ontonagon,
Baraga, Houghton, possibly the Keweenaw and
the cities of Ironwood and Baraga. Each
local unit would have one vote.
The board members discussed the
possibility of pouring a concrete floor in
the spec building sitting vacant in the
Industrial Park. It has been suggested that
the RLF funds might be approved for the
project, in that the floor might make the
building more saleable. There was some
discussion as to how thick the floor would
have to be, for different types of
occupants.
Since the proposed plan leaves many
unanswered questions the the local
government agreement was tabled until a
later date. |

Firefighters Respond to Sauna Fire |
 |
Ironwood
Township - October 23,2009 An afternoon
fire in Ironwood Township required the
services of both the Ironwood Township Vol.
Fire Department and the Ironwood City Vol
Fire Department. The City volunteers arrived
on the scene to relieve the IAPS firemen who
were first on the scene.
A water dam had to be errected on the
property located at E4621 North Star Road.
The Township tanker truck was used to keep
the water dam filled. The fire was confined
to the sauna and wood storage shed. The
large amount of fire wood at the scene
provided the fuel that fed the intense fire.
A bulldozer from an Ironwood construction
company had to be used to raze the
structure.
The property owned by Ron Johnson is
located just west of Vanderhagen road. Just
feet from the fire was a small utility
trailer with a sign that read "Warning" I
don't break for Liberals" Do you suppose Mr.
Johnson cared if the firefighters on the
scene were "Liberals" or "Right Wing
Extremist"? |

Nimrods
Score Victory in Wakefield |
 |
Wakefield October 20, 2009
The Wakefield Marenisco Cardinals took on
the Nimrods of Watersmeet last night in a
Jr. High School basketall matchup. The
matchup stopped after the first and only 6
Cardinal players entered the gymnasium.
Seventeen Nimrods stormed into the Wakefield
gymnasium like a golden tidal wave
descending on the arena. No matter how well
the Cardinals would play or not, would have
much of an outcome on this game. It was
obvious that twenty four fresh legs on the
sideline would be too much for the
Cardinals.
The results were predictable as was the
case last week when Hurley brought a
avalanche of black uniforms into
Bessemer.
Last night the kids from Wakefield hung
tough the first two quarters. But After the
buzzer rang to start the second half it
became another game. While Cardinals only
had one player to rotate, Watersmeet Coach
Bret Bessonen rote three and four players at
a time. While playing a conservative second
half, Bessonen's game plan was to wear down
the tiring Cardinal players, and he did just
that. At the end of the third quarter, the
Nimrods led the Cardinals 15-8. The final
score was 26-11.
Once again W/M coach Pete Yon called an
excellent game. The Cardinal girls played
well in the first half and then as expeded
faded in the second half. Summer Cutis
scored five of the W/M 11 points to lead the
team.
Two Nimrod players scored six points each
to lead the Nimrods, Michaela Burke Francis
Zelinski.
Officials for last night's game were
Loraine Massatti and Paul Harley. |

Bessemer
Considers Traffic Study |
 |
Bessemer - October
20, 2009 Much of last night's meeting was
consumed by a discussion pertaining to
conroling the speed limit on U.S. 2. It was
thought that the current speed limit signage
along the highway is inadequate either by
placement or in number. The problem arises
in that if the city formally requests that
signs be either added or relocated a traffic
study would be instituted by the State
Police. The traffic control signage is under
the province of MDOT however, MDOT may not
act upon a request until the State Police
Study is completed. The plot really thickens
here as a study might result in a speed
limit being increased. If that were to occur
the signage question would be a mute point.

Completes Bergland Ramp Project |
 |
Bergland -October 19,
2009 The DNR has called it a wrap on the
new boat ramps and parking facility it
constructed this past summer. Construction
of this project was completed in just three
months. The facility will now accommodate
many more boats, car and trailers than the
previous parking lot. The parking facility
will now accommodate 35 vehicles with
trailers. In addition, the project will
included a 36 foot wide by 70 foot long boat
ramp and a 5 foot by 30 foot courtesy pier.
The DNR represwentative was uncertain as
to the future of the old ramp. However, the
roadway into the area will be revamped next
year.
The new parking area includes an ADA
compliant vault restrooms and handicap
parking facilites.
The DNR representative told us that the
Bergland launch facility handles a great
many boats during the fishing season. The
fisherman are bound to be pleased with the
ramps which can handle more than one boat at
a time.
The $200,000 project was funded through
the Michigan State Waterways Fund, a
restricted fund derived from boat
registration fees and a portion of the
Michigan marine fuel tax.
