Quarter Final Round of
Cerebral Sweet 16

Ironwood Red Devils vs.
Sault Ste. Marie Blue Devils

The first game of Whiz Kid High School Bowl quarter finals  took place Saturday evening when the Gremlins of Houghton went up against the Knights of Norway. Following that game, the Blue Devils of Sault Ste Marie challenged the Red Devils of Ironwood

The event dubbed "The Cerebral 16" by WNMU began earlier this year with 50 teams was reduced to sixteen school finalist and now eight teams go into the quarter finals. Houghton had earlier defeated Westwood and Norway defeated Ishpeming. Ironwood defeated the Midgets of Hurley and Sault Ste Marie defeated Ontonagon.

The Red Devils, coached by Steve Boyd, jumped out to an early lead and performed quite well. The Ironwood team consisted of team captain Barth Kerkove, Nicoli Dowd, Liz Perkis and Joe Aukee.

It was Ironwood’s misfortune to face off against what may be one of the toughest teams in the tournament. The Blue Devils were led by team captain Jim Drockton who really is a whiz kid who excels in all topics. His team mates were Wendy Okenfels, Kris Killips and Mishna Chandler. The Blue Devils were coached by Tina Kaye.

The final score was Blue Devils 295, Red Devils 170

In the first match of the evening the Gremlins of Houghton took on the Knights of Norway

The Houghton team, like the Blue Devils, was a contender all season. Houghton was led by Team Captain Haveh Pandey. Members of the team included Emily Vandam, Tony Pesola and Robert Suits. The Gremlins were coached by Joe Martel.

Norway Team Captain was Tony Dzik and his team consisted of Bridget Thorne, Evan Reid and Ben Reat. The Knights of Norway were coached by Shellie Millela.

The final score was Houghton 380 - Norway 125.

The High School Bowl, now in its 30th year, is produced by our local PBS affiliate WNMU, Marquette.
