The first game of
Whiz Kid High School Bowl quarter finals took
place Saturday evening when the Gremlins of Houghton went up
against the Knights of Norway. Following that game, the Blue
Devils of Sault Ste Marie challenged the Red Devils of
Ironwood The event dubbed "The Cerebral 16" by
WNMU began earlier this year with 50
teams was reduced to sixteen school finalist and now eight
teams go into the quarter finals. Houghton had earlier
defeated Westwood and Norway defeated Ishpeming. Ironwood
defeated the Midgets of Hurley and Sault Ste Marie defeated
Ontonagon.
The Red Devils, coached by Steve Boyd, jumped out to an
early lead and performed quite well. The Ironwood team
consisted of team captain Barth Kerkove, Nicoli Dowd, Liz
Perkis and Joe Aukee.
It was Ironwood’s misfortune to face off against what may
be one of the toughest teams in the tournament. The Blue
Devils were led by team captain Jim Drockton who really is a
whiz kid who excels in all topics. His team mates were Wendy
Okenfels, Kris Killips and Mishna Chandler. The Blue Devils
were coached by Tina Kaye.
The final score was Blue Devils 295, Red Devils 170
In the first match of the evening the Gremlins of
Houghton took on the Knights of Norway
The Houghton team, like the Blue Devils, was a contender
all season. Houghton was led by Team Captain Haveh Pandey.
Members of the team included Emily Vandam, Tony Pesola and
Robert Suits. The Gremlins were coached by Joe Martel.
Norway Team Captain was Tony Dzik and his team consisted
of Bridget Thorne, Evan Reid and Ben Reat. The Knights of
Norway were coached by Shellie Millela.
The final score was Houghton 380 - Norway 125.
