It was a festive seasonal atmosphere along Aurora and adjoining
streets. The evening began with holiday music provided by the
beautiful voices of the LLW Accent Choir. The kids strolled the
downtown streets singing favorite yuletide melodies just as it
was done in seasons past. They did a great job and they put the
onlookers into the holiday spirit. Volunteers offering hot cocoa
and coffee to the spectators added to the story book ambiance
downtown. We didn’t see any chestnuts glowing in an open fire,
but there was plenty of popcorn!
Also taking place before the parade was the fine arts and crafts
sale at the Historic Downtown Theatre. Local artists donated
their art work to the theatre, with the proceeds going to the
HIT. This was a wonderful event by talented and generous local
artists that benefited a very worthy cause. We hope that all our
readers will support our fabulous theatre.
The parade was terrific. There were many great floats decorated
in this year’s theme “A Family Christmas” It was a tough
decision for the three parade judges, Jim Lorenson, Rick Semo
and an un-named third person. However, the judges, in spite of
the difficulty, did come up with a winner, a second place and
third place floats.
Drum Roll Please!
First Place – The Klassy Float of The Klassic Kruisers. (we told
you, didn’t we?)
Second Place – The Miner’s Memorial Float
Third Place – Aspirus Health Systems
Three really great entries.
Those weren’t the only winners last night as seven 50/50 prizes
totaling $10,000 were given out.
Drum Roll Please!
The winners were:
$5,000 – ticket number 75 – Ben & Maria Sokol
$2,000 – ticket number 101 – Kristine Carlson
$1,000 – ticket number 178 – Joann Bruneau
$ 500 – ticket number 99 – Fr. Darryl Pepin
$500 – ticket number 174 – James Patterson
$500 – ticket number 173 – Shirley Allen
$500 – ticket number 155 – Robert Constantini
Following the parade Santa Claus and Mrs. Santa made a stop at
Candy Cane Court, located inside the River Valley Bank Building.
Santa listened to the wish list from local boys and girls. His
Elves are already preparing for the delivery of the gifts!
Another wonder event took place after the parade in the Ironwood
Memorial Building. The Gogebic Range Band and the Claudettes
performed their Annual Christmas Program. Playing to a large
crowd gathered in the ballroom, the GRCB played a host of
Holiday songs. They were really terrific! Their talent and the
acoustics of the room provided everyone with a super musical
experience. The Claudettes did a great number, dancing to “The
March of the Wooden Soldiers” as we’ve said many times, Ironwood
may be a small area but it is very big on talent.
