Saturday night the Lowell Street Band
performed at the Bad Bear Casino located in Odanah, WI. The Casino’s
Kakagon Room was filled to capacity with LSB groupies and other rock
aficionados.
This was a great venue to hear the LSB. The sound
system and lighting system were top notch, as was
the band, but aren’t they always?

Red Devils Score First 2009 HSB Victory
In Marquette
Marquette - November 23, 2009
The Ironwood Red
Devils made their first 2009 season TV appearance on
WMNUTV’s High School Bowl. As always, the match
actually occurred several weeks ago and are aired at
a later date. While we knew the results of the
match, we prefer to hold off announcing the game
results until after its first viewing.
The Red Devils competed against Superior Central,
a team they played against last season. The results
would be all too familiar for SC, who lost to
Ironwood 230-210 this past February.

Ironwood Christmas Season Begins
Ironwood Mi - November 20, 2009
Downtown Pocket Park
The city of Ironwood has started the Holiday
Season with the annual Christmas Tree lighting
ceremony at the downtown pocket park, and preparing
for the Jack Frost Parade.
People began gathering before 4 p.m., getting
into the spirit with hot apple cider being served by
city manager Scott Erickson.
Mrs. Schroeder’s Accent Choir started of the
festivities , entering singing Christmas songs and
providing the setup for the introduction of the
night’s guest speaker. Mayor Burchell welcomed Bill
Johnson to the audience. Johnson entertained with
poems and humor.
The GOISD Board of Directors held its
November meeting last night at its offices in Bergland. The members
discussed the results of the recent election where two millage proposals
failed to be adopted. The Board members were in agreement that the
proposal was not adequately publicized, or properly explained to the
electors.
The two Headley overrides were narrowly defeated at the same time
that the college renewal millage won by a very large vote margin.
The GOISD Superintendent Bruce Mayle will reintroduce the matter to
the area superintendents at next month’s superintendents round table.
The hope is to place the items back on the ballot in May 2010.
A failure by the voters to pass the measure will result in the
individual school districts paying for the Special Ed. Services out of
their own General Funds. The local district’s are already facing funding
cuts by the legislature. The addition of fees for Special Ed services
will ultimately impact the bottom line at each local district. It
doesn’t require a genius IQ to understand what the ultimate impact on
student’s class choices and class sizes.
In other matters
Superintendent Mayle provided the latest information regarding school
funding by the inept Michigan Government. There is nothing more to
report at this moment.
ED: The legislation that was passed by the legislature and inadequately
funds the needs of Michigan’s students, has been designed to
encourage local districts into consolidating services. By doing so, the
districts will get back some of their funding cuts. (word substitution
encourage=bully).
Rice Foundation Support
Exceeds Three Million
Ontonagon - November 20, 2009
Ontonagon County Commissioner,
Hubert Lukkari informed the commission of his latest meeting at
the Copper Country Mental Health Services Board.
Lukkari is a member of the CCMHSB Board of Directors, representing
the Ontonagon County Board. Tuesday he reported to the board about the
Rice Memorial Foundation and it’s financial contribution to the Mental
Health System.
The Foundation was established in 1967 and is overseen by a group of
professionals which attempts to maximize its assets and income for the
benefit of mental health services in Copper Country. Therefore there are
years where the Foundation may contribute more or less depending on the
prevailing economic conditions.
Since it formation, the Foundation has contributed more than three
million dollars to mental health causes. In addition to contributing to
mental health crisis intervention the foundation also provides
scholarships for students entering the Mental Health field.
The following table indicates the break down of the contributions
categorically by year.
Copper Country Mental Health Services provides an
array of services intended to increase independence, improve quality of
life, and support community integration and inclusion of the persons
served.
