26th Annual Lac Vieux Desert Traditional Pow Wow at Watersmeet

Watersmeet Sunday, August 10th
The pow-wow at Watersmeet came to a close Sunday after three exciting days of pow-wow. The Watersmeet powwow is somewhat smaller than the Baraga pow wow held a couple weeks ago, however it too has all the ingredients of a great event. There were many friendly attendees, vendors terrific drum groups and lots of tribal dancing.  In fact, it was an entire day of dancing. It seemed as though there were a lot more children participating in this event. Lots of Dads and Moms walking their children around the arena. It was great to see young people learning about and living their heritage.

The tribal website states "This event is a culmination of Native beliefs and traditions that inspire, communicate, and support Native American culture. It is with pride that we have expanded our facilities to support of our tribes growth and traditions. This event is a culmination of Native beliefs and traditions that inspire, communicate, and support Native American culture. Safe Harbor Holds Open House

August 13, 2008 Ontonagon

OPEN HOUSE SAFE HARBOR ADULT DAYCARE

Safe Harbor Adult Day Care held an open house today in their Copper Street premises. The Ontonagon Commission on Aging provides many services for senior citizens and the day care facility is one those services.

Lynn Isreal is the current "coordinator" for the facility. Lynn advises that "We provide intellectual and physical stimulation in a safe and caring environment. The non-profit organization is open three days a week from 1 0:30am to 4:30pm Monday, Tuesday's and Wednesday's. We wanted a place where families could take their relatives or loved ones and not have to worry about cost. A place where respite care is provided for a loved one."

The daycare facility provides board games, art and crafts as well as group activities. The facility has a kitchen on premises for baking. There is also a quite place to rest and a library. Meals on Wheels provide hot lunches for Safe Harbor for those clients that are there during the lunch hour.

"The planned activities are designed to promote physical dexterity and strength, encourage mental stimulation or to prevent further deterioration of each individual client's physical or mental facilities. Best of all Safe Harbor is a place to socialize in a safe and caring environment." Lynn went on to say "Since we are a non-profit organization we rely wholly on donations and grants. This way the burden of adult day care does not fall on the families already dealing with heavy health care costs or other issues associated with home health care. Care is provided to clients who are functionally and/or cognitively impaired. This includes but not limited to victims of strokes, dementia or in the early stages of Alzheimer's."

A number of representatives from other area agencies were on hand to answer questions Ruth Almen-Alzheimer's Association,

Marja Salani-Aging Service Specialist from Copper Country Mental Health,

Larry Wilczewski-Option Counselor from UPCAP

and Joan Harris Commission on Aging Program Director
.

If you know anyone in the community that could use our services have them call Safe Harbor at 884-2775. We are looking for volunteers who enjoy helping the elderly with projects they would not otherwise be able to accomplish.
