Reception Ushers
In Hubbard Exhibit |
|
Hancock - May 30 2009 An opening night reception for Marquette artist John
Hubbard served as the backdrop for his latest exhibit. Many art
admirers and former students traveled great distances in order to
partake in the reception.
The exhibit showcases thirty-four of John's oil paintings. The
subjects of these paintings can be found right here in the western
Upper Peninsula. John found that he needn't travel too far from home
to find the subject matter for these wonderful oil paintings.
Hubbard takes thousands of photographs in the field. Then at his
studio he envisions his future art work.

in Walker Show |
|
by Dennis Walikainen, senior editor
Photos by IronwoodInfo
Students' paintings, sculptures, mixed media and new media creations
took center stage this week at McArdle Theatre, which played host to
the Walker Art and Design Show. The variety was incredible, as was
the level of talent on display.
Lisa Tincknell described her beautiful ink and paint creations as
extensions of "doodling" she had done since she was a child.

The Rozsa's New Space to Showcase Art
|
|
by Dennis Walikainen, senior editor
Made possible by a generous gift from Ilene Niva, an
empty space will come alive. The Rozsa Center for the
Performing Arts has a new art gallery.
"It's been in the plans for years," says Mike Morelli,
director of the Rozsa Center, "and we are very excited
to have a new gallery."
Working with the Department of Visual and Performing
Arts and Mike Wilmers of Facilities Management, the
Rozsa staff cleaned out storage space to make room.
The Rozsa's Design and Marketing Coordinator, Niki
Belkowski, has been designing the new room, which is
downstairs from the Horner Lobby. And it needs to be
finished by September, according to Morelli.
"We've got a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian
Institution coming in," he says. "It's called 'The
Dancer Within,' and it features 48 incredible photos,
including some from the Tchaikovsky Ballet Theater's
Swan Lake, which we hosted here last year."
The website for the exhibit is www.sites.si.edu/images/exhibits/Dancer%20Within/slideshow/index.htm
.
Other possibilities in the future for the gallery
include featuring artists from the Keweenaw and
elsewhere.
"We've got a world-class watercolorist next door--Mary
Ann Beckwith," Morelli says. "And we are working with
a renowned illustrator from Time and Newsweek who we'd
like to bring in."
And art shows featuring student talent could also be
held in the new space.
"We are obviously very excited about this new campus
showpiece and can't wait to showcase art within it,"
Morelli says. |

Cheng Art Installation at
Community Arts Center April 7th - 30th |
|
HANCOCK, MI – Artist
Yueh-mei Cheng will create a
spatial-temporal chess board in the
Kerredge Gallery at the Copper Country
Community Arts Center, Hancock, this
April.
The New Media installation, titled
“TIME. SPACE. BEING.” will be on display
from April 7 to 30.
An opening reception for the artist will
take place at the Community Arts Center
Thursday, April 9, from 6:00 to 8:00
p.m.
New Media art describes creative
projects that make use of emerging media
technologies such as digital art,
computer graphics, computer animation,
virtual art, and interactive art
technologies. Their aim is to explore
the cultural, political, and aesthetic
possibilities of these tools. |
|
The genre emerged in the
1990s as the Internet and electronic
communication methods began to pervade
modern society. New Media projects are
often completed in collaboration with
other artists.
Cheng says her multi-media installation
places each visitor in a unique position
to play his/her own mind game of 3D
visual chess. Derived from her
meditative experiences, “TIME. SPACE.
BEING” creates images that echo the
existential reality of meditation.
Cheng adds that in art, time, space, and
beings are interwoven and inseparable.
She says that in this art installation,
one’s internal vision is represented by
pictographic images and metaphoric
symbols.
The letters of the alphabet become
beings that live beyond the ordinary
dimensions of perception, invoking the
ancient mystics. The viewer’s sense of
time and space is influenced externally
by the artist’s imagined appearance of
form, color, light, and sound.
To create the installation, Cheng is
collaborating with artists Aaron
Radzwilowicz, sound design, Jonathan
Soper, computer animation, Donica
Dravillas, glass design, and Karl
Larson, electrical support.
Yueh-mei Cheng is an associate professor
of studio arts at Finlandia University.
Her most recent book, “Visual Chess”
(2008), is closely related to the topics
of this installation.

Arts Center at 906-482-2333.

Watercolors by
Chris Wirtanen Featured
at Reflection Gallery March 22
to April 10 |
Hancock - March
19, 2009
An exhibit of
work by watercolorist Chris
Wirtanen is featured at the
Finlandia University Reflection
Gallery March 22 to April 10,
2009.
An reception and an artist's
talk will take place at the
gallery Thursday, April 2, at
1:00 p.m.
Chris Wirtanen says his
watercolors reflect the many
moods of Michigan's Upper
Peninsula. His impressions of
the rugged landscape and stark
beauty of his familiar haunts
are difficult to categorize, and
he shuns the idea of developing
a 'style.' He describes his
paintings as a reaction to the
moment.
"I have no particular approach,"
confirms Wirtanen. "Whatever I
am about at that instant, I will
paint."
Wirtanen is a retired art
educator who, after 37 years of
teaching, finally has an
opportunity to "practice what he
preaches". He completed a master
of arts with an emphasis on the
lost wax process of bronze
casting, and has completed
additional university study at
several institutions, including
University of Wisconsin,
Superior, and Northern Michigan
University, Marquette.
"Although education has been my
emphasis, the necessity to
create has always been there for
me," Wirtanen says. "Most of my
efforts have been in the
direction of mastering the media
I teach."
"The only thing constant in life
is change," Wirtanen states.
"The seasons change, our moods
change. My art will also change.
I am not content to continue to
travel one road. The excitement
of art is found in its
diversity."
A native of Ironwood, Michigan,
Wirtanen presently resides in
Bergland, Mich.
The Finlandia University
Reflection Gallery is open
Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m.
to 9:00 p.m. It is located on

gathered at Thursday's Artist Reception.

that families guard, sometimes even from
each other. |

questions from those gathered to see her
exhibit. Sarah sees her work as a way to
make people laugh. She points out that
comic pages are more than just
characters on a page, and that the text
is an important element of her artwork.
"Titles should do more than simply
describe a piece; they should be as much
a part of the piece as the composition
and pallet," Anderson says. "The story
should be enhanced by the image."

We visited Finlandia for the first time to
at that time to see the art work of the
University's very talented students. Since
then, we have provided coverage of
exhibits of many, many talented
artists. Many of these artist were students
enrolled in the school's International
School of Art and Design. We have never been
disappointed that we made the trip to
Hancock. But, last Thursday's exhibit was
the greatest yet. Viewing the work displayed
for this exhibit it is no wonder why the
