2009 Houghton County Fair |
 |
Houghton - September 1, 2009
The Houghton Fair took place this
past weekend. It got off to a rainy
start, however, the wet and cool
weather failed to dampen the
enthusiasm of fair goers. The Midway
rides hampered slightly early on
but, the midway rides remained open
most of the time.
Since a great deal of the fair
takes place inside the fair
buildings, livestock, horticultural
exhibits and shows were totally
unaffected by the weather. |
 |
Even in less than ideal weather
the Ferris Wheel still remains a
crowd favorite |
 |
Animal exhibits are in important
part of a fair. They are the
difference between a carnival
and a fair! |

"All Good Things Must
Come to an End" |
 |
Ironwood - August 28, 2009 This past Tuesday the Gogebic Range
Concert Band played it's final concert of the summer band series. It's
been a rewarding experience listening to this band and its talented band
members. Watching and listening to the band in Longyear Park is like
reliving Rockwell's version of Americana. Where else can you bring a lawn
chair to the park and enjoy such much entertainment. Longyear is the
perfect venue for the GRCB and the GRCB is the perfect entertainment for
Longyear.

Kimball Park "A
Special Place" |
 |
The residents of Kimball held their annual
town picnic this past Sunday. Residents, family
and friends gathered in Kimball's beautiful town
park.
The park is bounded by the West Branch of the
Montreal River. Crossing over the river via the
small bridge, you immediately become aware of the
park's special beauty. The park was created on
land donated by John and Mary Sola. The Solas
donated the land to the town in 1955, so that the
public could enjoy the beautiful Kimball Falls.
The park would host events such as weddings,
meetings and as it would this day, picnics.

Wastewater Authority Acts on Needs Assessments |
 |
Ironwood - 0August 27, 2009
The Wastewater Authority concluded work on
establishing a "Health Care Savings Plan" for its
Union Employees. The Plan willl be funded 100% by
the employees themselves. The plan permits
employees to contribute into an investment fund
with pre-tax income. The health care coverage
becomes effective when an employee retires or
ceases to be employed by the "Authority" When that
occurs the moneytaken out for health care benefits
are also tax free.
Tony Radjenovich, the MERS Regional Manager,
pictured above, was at the meeting hand to
answer any questions that the authority/board
members may have had. The board/authority members
approved the plan unanimously.
|
 |
 |
Also at todays meeting was Raman
Gopalan (above right) and Richard Vendlinsk (above
left) of Shift Engineering. They are preparing
Facility Master Plan and "Needs Assessment Survey
for the Wastewater facility. Shift will be
bringing in needs specialist and contractors from
all over the Region for the project.
With respects to the bids and proposal portion of
the project, Scott Erickson suggested that the bid
itself be presented in a separate envelope from
that of the proposal. The idea being that the
proposal would first be evaluated on its own
merits, without being influenced by the cost
factor. Then the pricing would be reviewed and the
entire package evaluated.
An Excellent Idea, Scott has been using this
methodology for 3 years in the city. |
