Welcome To Mel's Steakhouse!

June 20, 2009

From four o'clock to eight o'clock Saturday evening Mel's Bar was transformed into "Mel's Steakhouse" . The Ironwood Township Volunteer Firefighters held a fund raising steak dinner at Mel's, located on Lake Road in the township.

The steaks were absolutely great and for a measly $12. donation, potatoes, salad, coffee and dessert accompanied the steak.

Perhaps many of the diners have experienced this fare before as Mel's was filled to capacity. Of course, many of came just to support the ITVFD and it's need to payoff the new SCBBA gear that they recently acquired. Unfortunately, the cost of safety and fire fire fighting has escalated. What hasn't?
Ahhh, nothing beats the taste of a well prepared steak.!
Wayne and Jim, from the VFW served as the two culinary experts, who prepared the absolutely perfect steak dinners for a perfect Father's Day Dinner.

I.P.S.D. Officers Conduct
Annual Bicycle Safety Day

Image Slideshow
June 22, 2009

Saturday was a a beautiful Northwood's summer day, filled with many community events, as is usual this time of year. The day couldn't have been any better for the 108 kids that showed up for this year's Bicycle Safety Day. It was an even sunnier day for the 30 kids who left the IPSD building with brand new bicycles.

Each year the members of the Ironwood Public Safety Department host the event intended to promote Bicycle Safety. When asked when the event originated, no one knew exactly, however, this very worthwhile endeavor goes back a long long way.
Safety officer, Matt Sterbenz, showed us the inspection card pictured above it dates back to1947. The safety card was issued to Eddie Rovelksy "age 4" the card is dated April 15, 1949

pictured below is a photo taken during a Bike Safety Check at the Memorial Building

At yesterday's inspection, 108 kids registered and had their bikes inspected by Eric and John from the Hobby Wheel, one of the many sponsors of this years event. Each boy and girl that attended the bicycle safety class received a safety helmet, in addition to what they learned in the class.
As we've come to expect, the Ironwood Safety Officers did a great job Saturday and should be applauded for their efforts in this very important program.

In addition to those who donated money and prizes for the event, it should be noted that members of American Legion Post 5 donated and served hot dogs and other treats to those in attendance.

Gardeners Spruce Up Downtown

Village of Ontonagon Flower Beautification
Linda Graham, reporting

On Saturday, June 13, 2009, a group of ten ambitious Ontonagon residents got together to fill the flower planters that will adorn the main street this summer. A total of 16 planters were completed and then the group turned their attention to the big flower garden on main street and James K. Paul Park near the Holiday Stationstore. Many annuals were planted in among the perennials for splashes of color which hopefully will last through the summer season. The group started this project at 9:00AM and worked diligently till noon. Betty Porter has been the "Layout Designer" for the past several years. Betty expressed her gratitude to each and every one of workers.

by Dan Petersen, Community Development Director, City of Ironwood MI

I have had the pleasure of serving as Community Development Director for the City of Ironwood since March, 2008. The Community Development Office serves as staff to the Downtown Ironwood Development Authority, Ironwood Planning Commission, Ironwood Economic Development Corporation, and collaborates with other various boards and commissions at the local and regional levels.

Although I am relatively new to the Ironwood community, I am particularly fond of the downtown district. While I do understand that times are tough, the economy is not healthy on a national or world-wide it is important to note that downtown Ironwood is by no means desperate and is by no means dead. This was appoint that was made clear by Doyle Hyett, whose recent involvement with our downtown will be made more clear later. Indeed, downtown Ironwood has a strong economic potential, is positioned well to serve as a regional gathering place, and has a unique story to tell. The downtown is the cultural and historical center for the broader community. It is literally where Ironwood started. The unique architectural and business establishments that already exists are good foundations for economic development.

Recently, the community received recommendations from a nationally-renowned downtown consulting firm, HyettPalma, which were based on the firm’s extensive experience in working with downtowns as well as detailed information gathered from the community and the region. Focus sessions, one-on-one interviews, meetings with various boards, driving tours, walking tours, and other local data-gathering techniques served as the basis for the Ironwood Downtown Blueprint 2009 document. These processes – and the resulting recommendations - are exciting and important for various reasons. Not the least of which is the common vision that was created by residents, business owners, and users of the downtown for what they want their…your…downtown to look like in five years.

Another important result of the Blueprints process is the partnership that was established, which is often absent in other, similar planning processes. In this case, the partnership between state agencies such as the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) (the funding agencies for many downtown revitalization activities) .

City staff continues to monitor the programs available for businesses both downtown and city-wide. The most well-known resources to downtown business owners include the Downtown Façade Improvement Program (a 50%-50% grant program for exterior rehabilitation), Rental Rehabilitation (a 75%-25% grant program that could be used to enhance the residential living units above first-store commercial areas), and the City’s Economic Development Fund (a lending mechanism by which the City makes loans to businesses looking at start-up or expansion). Other mechanisms are available, but often times situations require more information. The Community Development Office is always willing to sit down with current and prospective business owners to see what type of assistance may be available to them in order to meet their goals. Please do not hesitate to contact me at (906) 932-5050 or petersend@cityofironwood.org

US 2 Returns to Four Lanes

Bessemer -  June 9, 2009

Yesterday MDOT workers began restoring US 2 back to a four lane highway. On April 27, 2009  the Bessemer City Council reversed itself and voted to return US 2 back to a four lane thoroughfare. Last year the council voted to turn the highway into a two lane corridor on a one year experimental basis. The year is up next month and evidently the experiment failed. This year's public hearing showed no more public support than evident last year.  There was a public hearing last week and only six residents showed up to support the two lane roadway.  There were 29 people speaking against it. Regardless of the numbers the MDOT experiment has gained little to no support in the last year. The Council voted 4-1 to go back to four lanes. Only councilman Carpenedo voted to keep the two lane road.
