2009 - Gogebic County Fair |
 |
|
After last years the Gogebic County Fair Board made a decision that
the amusement ride portion of the fair would change for the 2009
event. The decision was made in order to bring more rides at an affordable
price to Gogebic fair goers. The Indianhead Amusement Co. was chosen as
this provider for fair amusements. It was quite clear Saturday that the
decision was a good one. For just $10. kids of all ages could enter the
fair, view the exhibits and ride on or in the amusements rides all day and
all night long. Of course you might not want to ride all night long
considering the great talent presented on the Big Stage. |

Foley named 2009 Fair
Homemaker |
 |
Ironwood - August 24, 2009 Foley named 2009 Fair Homemaker
Sharon Foley of Ironwood is the 2009 Gogebic County Fair
Homemaker. She was presented the Homemaker of the Year plaque by
Lucia Patritto, County Director for MSU Extension, during an
awards ceremony at the Fairgrounds on Sunday afternoon.
Patritto noted that Sharon Foley entered seventy eight exhibits,
mostly in needlework, food preservation, and food preparation, but
also in photography, antiques, floral, folk arts, and garden
vegetables.
Sharon’s entries were on prominent display in two glass cases in
the exposition building on Sunday. Patritto made special mention
of a crocheted child’s vest, baked goods such as bread, several
types of pies and povitica, maple syrup, many canned items, and a
basket filled with beautiful garden produce. “I especially liked
the cross stitch saying ‘A fisherman and the catch of his life
live here’”, said Patritto.
Sharon has been married to Jim Foley for fourteen years. They have
five children, one in Virginia, one in South Dakota, and three who
live in Ironwood, along with “four wonderful grandchildren”, says
Sharon.
She is a member of Our Lady of Peace Church, where she serves as a
communion minister. Prior to retiring she worked as a secretary at
Associated Bank in Hurley.
Foley noted she has entered exhibits in the Gogebic County Fair
for a number of years, but never to this extent. Many family
members joined other fairgoers in celebrating her accomplishment.
Any resident of Gogebic County who is at least 18 years old may
compete to win the Homemaker award. The award is given through a
system where each ribbon given to an entrant is awarded points.
Exhibitors must have entries in four specified categories, but
entries in other departments are added on, as well.

Received a gift yesterday from the Range Master Gardeners.
The local volunteer gardeners presented the Carnegie
Library with five new gardening books, including
"Sow and Grow" a gardening book for young readers. |
|
Other donated gardening books included: Reader's
Digest "Container Gardening", "Insect, Disease &
Weed I.D.", "Growing Fruit in the Upper Midwest". The last
book is an excellent source for local gardeners who want
to grow fruit. This book was a text supplement for the
Wisconsin Master Gardener Advanced Fruit and
Vegetable class. These books are available for use by
members of the Bessemer and Wakefield Libraries.
While at the Carnegie, Lynn gave the Master Gardeners a
tour of the recently refurbished children's room in the
basement of the library. A few before and after shots can
be viewed by using the scroll bars on the above window.
The refurbishment has made a great difference in the

The Mood - A Spending Mood That Is! |
 |
Ironwood - August 21, 2009 I.A.S.D. in a spending
mood! Students to face hike in Hot Lunch Program.
At Monday evenings school board meeting, the board voted
to continue the 4 year old program, even though there is a
question as to whether or not the state will continue to
fund the program. If the state fails to fund the program it
will put the districts surplus in a precarious position. It
might be the item that puts the budget into the red.
SteveThomas called terminating the program "politically
disadvantageous "
Also, while in a spending mood the board approved rehiring
Naomi Wegmeyer, as a music instructor. Wegmeyer who is
currently retired and receiving a pension paid for by the
taxpayers will also be receiving the maximum salary allowed
under the union rules. Wegmeyer refused to rejoin the
district with anything less than "Step 6" status. The
practice of public employees retiring on taxpayer paid
pensions and then returning to taxpayer paid jobs is called
"Double Dipping".
The board also approved to increase the cost of hot
lunches. More than 50 % of the districts students are are
receiving free or reduced cost hot lunches. |

the DDA have been working on
reviving Calumet's
downtown district. Calumet has
chosen to go through the "Main

UPPCO to Lower Prickett Reservoir |
 |
August 19, 2009
Must complete required maintenance work
Houghton MI - Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) must lower the level
of the reservoir at Prickett Dam in order to complete required maintenance
work. To do the work safely, the water must be drawn down approximately
thirteen feet.
The drawdown will begin August 19, 2009, and continue at a rate of six
inches per day until the minimum level is reached. Flows in the Sturgeon
River will be higher during the drawdown period but will approximate the
inflow to the reservoir once the working level has been reached.
"We'll monitor for stranded fish and other aquatic organisms and will
attempt to move them to permanently inundated portions of the reservoir,"
said Shawn Puzen, Environmental Consultant. "Once the survey is finished,
we'll report numbers, species, and condition to the Michigan Department of
Natural Resources."
Work is scheduled to begin around September 14, 2009, and be completed by
October 15, 2009. Once the work is finished, the reservoir will return to
its normal level at a rate determined by river inflows at that time.
