Ironwood - June 2, 2008
Sixty-three fourth grade students from Norrie School along
with their teachers
Mrs. Quigley, Miss Kusz, and Mrs. Kangas spent a day at
Norrie Park learning new skills.
Gordon Frase headed up the Range Master Gardeners who helped
the fourth graders plant marigolds in the classroom in March
and then the Master Gardeners helped the students transplant
the marigolds, water and mulch the flowers at the park
gardens.
After planting, small groups of students spent time with
Principal Kerkove who took the students on a tour and Mrs.
Kerkove taught a water color class with the students.
Also, Dave Anderson of the Gogebic County Forestry and Park
Commission explained to the children how to measure a tree
to determine its age and walked the students around the park
to show them all the native evergreens.
While Vickie Nelson, MSU-4H Program Associate taught the
enthusiastic children casting skills, other students walked
through the park with Sue Trull, forest botanist at the US
Forest Service in Ironwood pointed out the various invasive
plants and animals that are at Norrie Park .
Jim Mildren, the chairman of the Norrie Park Committee of
the Kiwanis Club of Ironwood, stopped by to see how the day
was progressing. The local Kiwanis Club has been involved
and has funded the beautification program with the Norrie
Students at Norrie Park for 14 years.
For the past fifty years, Kiwanis has spent funds and

Library Contract a Done Deal
|
May 27, 2008 Ironwood Township
The impasse between the Ironwood Library Board and the Ironwood
Township Board of Supervisors is over. Thanks to level headed
and sensible members of each side, the contract was approved 4-2
at last week's Library Board Meeting and was ratified tonight by
a 6-1 vote at Township Hall.
The negotiations were at an impasse largely because of the
negative attitude of Bruce Noren and his unfriendly Friend$ of
the Library. From the outset Noren tried to sabotage the
negotiations he was supported by Board chairman, Margaret Rayner,
wife of Ironwood School Superintendent, James Rayner.

War Memorial Completed
The Ontonagon VFW Post 5600 took on the task of
repairing the War Memorial with hopes of
completing the work by Memorial Day. They
accomplished this task on May 23rd with time to
spare. According to Jim Holmes, Post Commander,
the cement was cracking away from the stone so all
the loose stone were refit and mortered. The
granite was waterblasted and acid cleaned and then
a protective coat was applied. Hawley Lumber
Company donated the paint for the project. Also
the under-ground piping and valves have been
replaced. There is now a drain and cut-off valves.
All the electrical has been updated and a new box
installed. Scott Weisinger and Joe DeHut from the
Power Company were on hand for this. Gary Komula
and John Hamm from the Village helped with the
clean-up after the work was completed. Dave
Gregory, head of the committee to repair the war
memorial, stated that an estimate of $500.00 in
supplies will be paid by the Ladies Auxilary.

Large Turnout
For U.S. 2 Proposal A second
spokesperson for MDOT, Ben Feldhausen was on hand
to discuss the visual impact portion of the US 2
proposal. You can review it on the Bessemer
website. Interestingly the grants referred to with
this presentation do not emanate from MDOT, but
rather from the U.S. Government, through a program
that may or may not be around in the future. Over
and over residents kept confusing the visual
enhancement presentation with the lane change
proposal. Over and over the MDOT representatives
had to explain that the two items are independent
and one has nothing to do do with the other.
Photo right: Rocky Racovities, owner of Bessemer
Auto spoke to the commission on the lane change
proposal and how it will hurt his business. Rocky
has plans to close the new Ford Sales lot and
bring the used cars back to his original location.
The original location will be greatly hampered due
to the semi's backing up in front of his property. |

Monday _ Bessemer Michigan
Monday evening the Bessemer City
Commission meeting was moved into the auditorium
in order to accommodate the more that 200
residents and business owners who showed up
largely to protest the proposed lane changes to
U.S Hwy 2. At least 6 out of 10 speakers were
against the plan and 2 petitions were presented to
the council that were also against the measure.
The proposal is not a new one one. It originated
over 5 years ago and was presented to both
Ironwood and Bessemer at that time. Ironwood
rejected the proposal immediately and the concept
seemed to die with the Ironwood rejection. At the
special hearing many people asked how did this
idea reincarnate itself? No one on the city
council would take credit for the proposal, and
the MDOT representatives would not provide an
answer to the question. Jokingly, the audiance
proposed that it arrived as a lightning bolt from
God.
Mike Premco, MDOT representative explained
that similar lane changes elsewhere have resulted
in an accident rate reduction of approximately
20%. They would however, do as most politicians do
hedge by saying they could not predict the same
results for Bessemer. Although U.S. 2 in Bessemer
carries a daily rate of 10,000 vehicles
(36,500,000 vehicle annually) it only has 10-12
accidents per year. The severity of these in terms
of property damage or bodily injury was not
disclosed. This information was greeted by
residents who then said "if it isn't broken, don't
fix it."

Bessemer golfers still swinging The high school team nearly had to shut down. BESSEMER -- The Bessemer High
School golf team came close to shutting down earlier
this spring, but thanks to some hard work and an
anonymous donor, they've been able to stay out on
the links. The school district cut off
funding last summer, and the team was hoping to
continue as a self-funded sport, but by April,
things looked bleak. They didn't have the $1400 they
needed for transportation and operational costs. But an anonymous donor stepped
forward with some cash and the students started
paying a participation fee. "The kids have done a very good to
this point," explained principal Mark Johnson. "We
had to charge them a participation fee upfront to
make sure we could raise those funds. We hope by the
end of the season, we can refund that amount back to
the students and then we have a base going forward
into the next year." The golfers are still trying to
raise money. They've scheduled a car wash fundraiser
at the Ironwood Wal-Mart on Saturday, May 10. And on
May 17, the team will hold a prime rib dinner
fundraiser at the BEssemer VFW. |

Ironwood Township Board
News April 15, 2008 - Ironwood Bureau The Charter Township Board of Trustees meet
in regular session yesterday. The group quickly dispensed
the many items on their agenda. The communications section
of the Agenda is what brought most of the afternoon's
discussion. The trustees had received a letter from M.D.O.T. regarding
the U.S. 2 and Country Club Road intersection now know as
the Wal-mart Intersection. The details of the letter were
not disclosed. However, it was noted that there has already
been two accidents at the site. Two letters were received
from the Ironwood Public Library. The township has made an
offer to the library group. The library board did not
respond to the offer in a timely fashion, so that it might
be be acted upon at the Township Meeting. There was a great
deal of discussion by the trustees and the audience on this
matter. The center of the subject is the difference in fees
charged to Erwin and Ironwood Townships. While Erwin pays
the library just a few hundred dollars for use of the
library by its constituents, Ironwood Township is charged a

Public Not Welcomed
At Public Library For several weeks the Ironwood public library advertised
"an appreciation night at the Carnegie Library." The ad
posted on the Daily Globe Calendar clearly stated that the
social event was open to the public and that refreshments
would be served. However, when an IronwoodInfo reporter
and photographer showed up at the affair they were told by
Elaine Erickson, librarian and wife of city manager Scott
Erickson, that the event was a private party sponsored by

Ontonagon School
District
Makes Pitch For Bond Issue
At the beginning of the
Township Board Meeting it was announced that this would be a
regular township meeting and was "not a public hearing on
the bond proposal."
Legally this was of course correct, however, a public
hearing it was indeed. That's what everyone was there for
and that's what everyone got. The regular meeting was
formally and promptly, closed.
When the Dog and Poney Show was over Ontonagon Taxpayers
went home with more questions than answers.
